Annual Women in Training 5K to support girls facing period poverty
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) — Runners and walkers will gather Sunday, Oct. 11, for the seventh annual Women in Training 5K, a fundraiser aimed at empowering girls and addressing period poverty.
The event will be held at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, 1 Festival Drive, in Montgomery, in recognition of International Day of the Girl Child. Organized by Women in Training Inc., the annual race raises money to provide menstrual, dental and hygiene supplies to underserved youth.
Women in Training Ambassadors Kacie Caldwell and Carrington Scott spoke with Action 8’s Estee Morrison about the event and how funds raised will help provide essential supplies to young women.
The seventh annual WIT Race will begin at 8 a.m. and will feature two events.
The WIT 5K Run/Walk will cover 3.1 miles, with participants receiving a timed result. Overall and age-group awards will be presented based on finishing times, and all 5K participants will receive a WIT T-shirt.
A 1-mile WIT Fun Walk will also begin at 8 a.m. for participants who want a shorter course.
The race events will be followed by a festival from 10 a.m. to noon.
Organizers describe the event as a local race with a global mission, using funds raised to support efforts to ensure young people have access to menstrual and other essential hygiene supplies.
