ONLY ON 8: Great Alabama 650 releases statement about race cancellation
ONLY ON 8 (WAKA) – As Action 8 News has reported, Alabama Scenic River Trail officials have cancelled this year’s Great Alabama 650 river race, which had been underway through the state before Hurricane Isaias formed in the Gulf.
The race started Saturday at Lake Weiss in northeast Alabama and went through the state, including in Wetumpka, Montgomery and Selma, before racers were due to start arriving at the finish line at Fort Morgan on Mobile Bay this weekend.
That would have put them in the middle of the storm as they paddled in remote areas where it would not be easy to get to safety. That’s why race officials say they had no choice but to call off the race early. No winners will be declared.
