One person killed in Birmingham when tree falls on home during Hurricane Isaias
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WAKA) – One person has been killed in Birmingham when a tree fell on a home as Hurricane Isaias passed through Alabama overnight.
It happened in a neighborhood between Center Point Parkway and Interstate 59 in the Roebuck and Huffman areas of the city.
The death was confirmed by Shea Hess of the Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency.
Another person was inside the home. There is no information on that person’s medical status.
In a statement early this morning, Gov. Kay Ivey said a second person in Alabama had also died. There is no information yet on where that death happened.
“This storm cannot clear fast enough,” Gov. Ivey said.
“It brought in heavy winds throughout Alabama, taking down trees, knocking out power and doing some damage. Unfortunately, we have also learned that two Alabamians have lost their lives. I am praying for their loved ones this morning. I offer my sincere thanks, too, for the various crews we have positioned throughout the state who have been diligently working to clear debris and restore power.”
“That is the focus right now, and I am proud to report that all major roadways, including the ICW (Intracoastal Waterway), have been reopened. There are still some road closures due to downed power lines, and our linemen are working to clear that as soon as possible. In Escambia County, for example, our folks are still working on reopening a portion of US-31 north of Brewton. Fellow Alabamians, please continue being smart today as cleanup continues. Safety for y’all is the main thing today.”
