The Selma Fire Department conducts a week of fire fighter training — to help improve public safety in the city of Selma.

Selma Fire and Rescue uses the Alabama Fire College climbing and drill tower — to conduct bail out drills — and train on fire survival and victim rescue techniques.

“Ways to get ourselves out of harm’s way. Just in case we got too much fire and we got to get out. It’s an emergency,” said Lt. Russell Pardue.

Waka Fftraining1019 Pkg“So, if a victim’s in there we find the victim. we can get them down the ladder safely. Just trying to stay sharp with our skills and continue to progress. Motivate the other guys to get in there and get better every day.”

Fire fighters work constantly to improve their skills — and maintain their equipment. So, that they’re ready to respond at a moment’s notice — when called upon.

“We’re constantly training, we’re constantly doing something. We’re studying, keeping up with the latest and greatest techniques,” said Pardue.

“Everything we do is about saving lives. When we come to work and work a 24 hour shift, we’re here to save lives. We took an oath to protect and that’s what our job is.”

“We’re doing something everyday, day and night trying to make sure that we’re prepared for any and every emergency possible,” said Fire Chief Walter Dailey.

Dailey says the department uses the Fire College tower to conduct a week of fire fighter training every year.

The department also uses equipment from the Fire College for structure-fire — search and rescue — and propane-fire training.
