Montgomery City Council, County Commission, and Private Sector leaders meet about health authority initiative
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – The Montgomery City Council, Montgomery County Commission, and leaders in the private sector met today to further discuss setting up a health authority.
The health authority would be a separate organization and governing body that would be made up of city and county appointed officials. Their primary job would be to work to obtain federal, philanthropic, and private dollars to help sustain and create more effective healthcare services in Montgomery.
These leaders met to ask questions and discuss what this would look like in the county and for the city. The health authority would be independent of the county and city, which Mayor Steven Reed says would be most beneficial.
“It’s independent of city and county government, so it’s able to really look at things in an objective way that doesn’t get swayed by the politics of the city or the politics of the county. It allows them to streamline focus on the solutions that we need for healthcare in this region. We think that would be the best opportunity to work with our healthcare partners that currently exist and some that we may want to bring to our community to help provide other services that we do not have such as mental health and pediatric care,” Mayor Steven Reed told Action 8 News.
The next steps for the Montgomery City Council and County Commission are to deliberate, put the item on their agendas, and then vote on it.
