ONLY ON 8: Political Analyst Steve Flowers describes the kind of governor he expects Tommy Tuberville to be
ONLY ON 8 (WAKA) – Alabama voters have chosen their fourth Republican governor in a row with the election of Tommy Tuberville, but Action 8 Political Analyst Steve Flowers says there are some differences between Tuberville and most of the governors before him.
Flowers told Action 8’s Glenn Halbrooks that because Tuberville isn’t from Alabama, he didn’t grow up around state politics, where many alliances are formed starting in college, usually at the University of Alabama or at Auburn University, as those interested in politics start planning their career. Tuberville is from Camden, Arkansas. The last time someone born out-of-state was elected governor of Alabama was in 1938.
Flowers said in addition to that, Tuberville had a successful career as a football coach before becoming interested in serving in politics. Most other Alabama governors have worked their way up over many years, even a lifetime, before taking the governor’s office.
Flowers also took time to comment on a statement Tuberville made in his victory speech in Auburn. Tuberville said he would work to make the streets of Montgomery safer from crime.
“Folks, I’m going to clean up Montgomery, Alabama,” Tuberville told the crowd of supporters. “I give you my word. I will make it safe to walk the streets of downtown Montgomery, even if I have to put the National Guard on every damn corner.”
That statement was met with cheers and applause. Flowers wonders whether National Guard members, who have other careers, would be willing to give up their private time in order to patrol Montgomery on behalf of Tuberville.
