Bill: Open Driver’s License Offices at Least Twice a Week

The Alabama lawmakers are considering a bill that would require the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to open driver’s license offices in every county at least two days a week.

The Decatur Daily (http://bit.ly/1QmKt7g ) reports that the Senate General Fund committee on Wednesday says the bill still needed some revisions, but gave it a favorable report and sent it on to the full Senate.

Sen. Hank Sanders, a Democrat from Selma, says driver’s licenses are crucial not only for driving, but for identification purposes.

ALEA estimates that expanding days of operation in many counties will cost up to $1.35 million a year.

Last fall, ALEA announced the closure of 31 driver’s license offices due to budget cuts. Following a backlash, most of those offices were reopened for one day a month.
