Auburn’s Caitlin Atkinson Named SEC Co-Gymnast of the Week
AUBURN, Ala. (auburntigers.com) – Senior Caitlin Atkinson of the No. 6 Auburn gymnastics team was honored by the SEC Tuesday and named Co-Gymnast of the Week for the second time this season.
In her final meet in Auburn Arena this past Friday, the Houston product put together her best performance of the season, capturing all event titles on her way to a season-high 39.725 in the all-around. It was her fourth all-around title of the year.
Atkinson opened the meet with a 9.9 on vault to capture her third title in the event. She followed with a season-best score of 9.925 on bars on her way to her fifth title on the apparatus. Her 9.925 on beam tied a season high and was her third beam title this year.
In the anchor position, Atkinson capped floor exercise with a career-tying score of 9.975, winning her third floor title this season. Her performance in the final rotation helped lift the Tigers to a program record-tying score of 49.600.
The honor is the fourth of Atkinson’s career.
With her help, Auburn scored its fifth-straight 197 in a 197.175-193.275 win over Arizona State. That score lifted the Tigers to sixth nationally and a program-best 197.120 RQS score. It also solidified the team’s second-consecutive appearance in the coveted night session of the SEC Championships.
Auburn’s postseason begins Saturday, March 19, at 5 p.m. CT in the second session of the SEC Championships. The fourth-seeded Tigers, along with top seed Florida, No. 2 seed LSU and No. 3 seed Alabama, will compete inside Verizon Arena in North Little Rock, Ark.
