Jefferson Davis celebrates basketball state title win with trophy ceremony
A trophy ceremony was held in the Jefferson Davis gym to celebrate the girls basketball team's 7A state title win.
MONTGOMERY, Ala (AlabamaNews.Net) — The Jefferson Davis basketball team celebrated their 7A state title win today with an assembly in the school’s gym. The Lady Vols have won the 7A state title for the past two years and are becoming the new dominating force in the 7A.
“The kids have worked really, really hard, and I’m glad they have something to show for it,” JD head coach LaKenya Knight said. “We made history and that’s a really big deal for us.”
Knight stressed the difficulty of repeating a state title to her team as soon as the season began, but they persevered. They took down McGill-Toolen 52-38 in the 7A state title game last month, and today the team was able to celebrate with the rest of the Jeff Davis student body.
“It feels great that everybody knows what we were trying to do here and what we were working with. I’m glad they came out to support and show us love today,” said Lady Vols senior Jasmine Walker.
Aside from the celebration with the faculty and students, the trophy ceremony allowed Knight one last chance to make memories with the seniors on the team.
“I’ve had them since they were little bitty kids at 14 years old, and now they’re 17 or 18 and moving on,” Knight said. It’s been a blessing, and I’m also going to miss them.
Although the feeling on moving on is bittersweet, the 2016 Lady Vols will always be remembered as champions.
