Troy’s Fernández Cano Earns At-Large Berth to NCAA Regionals

TROY, Ala (troytrojans.com) – Troy junior Fátima Fernández Cano has earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Regional field as an individual; she will play at the NCAA East Regional which will be held at the Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.

The NCAA East Regional runs May 5-7 with 18 teams and six individuals. The top six teams and top three individuals (not on qualifying teams) will advance to the NCAA Championship.

“Fátima put together an impressive resume this season and there was not doubt in my mind that she would earn an at-large bid into Regionals,” Troy head coach Bart Barnes said. “To win five tournaments and finish in the top 10 of two others is truly remarkable and she deserves this opportunity to continue her season.”

Cano finished the season ranked 18th nationally with a 72.15 stroke average and tied for 19th with a +0.35 score versus par. A native of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, Cano was one of the best in the country on par-4 holes as she finished fifth with a 4.05 average for the year.

This will be the third straight NCAA Regional appearance for Cano after Troy earned the Sun Belt’s at-large team bid each of the past two years; she becomes the first Troy women’s golfer to earn an at-large individual berth to the NCAA postseason.

Cano won five of her nine tournaments on the year and posted an average finish of 5.2 in all the events. She finished the year with 10 of her 26 rounds under par and with five rounds in the 60s.
