Dixie Lions Club’s East-West All-Star baseball to showcase local talent
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Montgomery Dixie Lions Club) — Some of the best high school baseball players in the River Region will perform for scouts and supporters on Sunday, May 22nd at Montgomery’s Paterson Field.
The Dixie Lions Club’s East-West All-Star Game features players from schools in Montgomery, Lowndes, and Autauga Counties.
Players selected for the annual event are likely to be seen at the college and professional levels in the future. Bringing such a broad base of talent together all at once, East-West Baseball has become a major drawing card for scouts seeking the most worthy candidates for their teams’ scholarships and contracts.
In addition to providing opportunities for the players, East-West baseball is a major fund-raiser to support the youth and eyesight related service projects of the Dixie Lions Club.
For over six decades, the club has given various forms of assistance to blind individuals, indigent eye patients, and young people. This has included support for guide dog schools, Alabama Institute/Industries for the Blind, and camps for diabetic children, as well as Alabama Lions Sight Conservation Association and the service projects of Lions International. The Dixie Lions also provide various other services to the community, and totally funded the playground for visually impaired children at Montgomery’s Ida Belle Young Park.
Lions East-West Baseball originated in Birmingham in 1943. Some of its former participants who went on to pro ball include Mike Mordecai, Rusty Greer, Russ Davis, Jimmy Key, Jeff Brantley, Turner Ward, Brian Meadows, Todd Jones, Jeff Branson, Scott Sullivan, Terry Adams, Kerry Lacy, and Reggie Golden.
Game time for this year’s event is 2:00 this Sunday afternoon at Paterson Field, and ADMISSION IS FREE.
