ASU’s Phelps named to NFCA South All-Regional 3rd team
LOUISVILLE, Ky (bamastatesports.com) – For a second consecutive season, a member of the Alabama State University softball team was named to one of the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Regional teams.
Senior pitcher Maddie Phelps earned the prestigious distinction of being named to the NFCA South All-Regional Third Team after an impressive season in which she was the SWAC Pitcher of the Year, a five-time SWAC Pitcher of the Year and the ace on the Lady Hornets’ SWAC Championship team, its first in program history.
The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association’s 10 regions with first, second team and third team selections. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to the 2016 NFCA Division I All-American squads.
The 2016 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at approximately 5 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, June 1, via NFCA.org.
Phelps rolled out a record of 18-12 with a 3.70 ERA with 138 strikeouts, 16 complete games, five shutouts and threw a no-hitter at Grambling State back in March.
Her 18 wins were the third most in a single-season by a pitcher in Alabama State’s history (Danielle Scott-21 wins in 2001 and Shondalette Chatfield-21 wins in 1998)
Her 28 career wins in two seasons with the Hornets ranks fifth all-time and her 184 career strikeouts ranks sixth in program history.
“Her record alone from last year to this year was a tremendous improvement,” said ASU head coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson.
“It was definitely a way to go out on top for her with all the strikeouts and innings pitched that she had. Leading us this season to being the SWAC Pitcher of the Year really helped her confidence.”
