Tallassee Mt. Vernon Theatre Could Get Major Makeover

A historic building in downtown Tallassee could soon be getting a major makeover. City officials are calling this the “Year of the Theatre.”

The 80-year-old building has been closed since the 1960s, but now volunteers and city officials want to bring it back to life. A lot of the historic pieces are still in place, including the old ticket booth, but the building needs major upgrades to be in line with current safety and fire codes.

Those are expensive upgrades, and because they involve electricity, heat and air conditioning and sprinkler units, they need to be done by licensed professionals. Volunteers on the project say some of that work has been donated to the city, but they still have a long way to go to reach their $430,000 goal.

Project volunteers have set a big goal. They want to be able to raise enough money to open the doors by the end of December, but they say they’ll need the community’s help to do it.

If you can donate, contact the Mount Vernon Theatre Board or Tallassee City Hall.
