Police And Deputies Are Gearing Up For First Day Of School

Law enforcement officials in Butler County are gearing up for the first day of school.
Â
More than 40 Butler County deputies and Greenville Police Officers are taking part in active shooter training this week. Some of the staged exercises are taking place inside W.O. Palmer Elementary. Officials are preparing law enforcement for any potential shooting situation inside the building.
Â
Officers say they are trained in handling active shooter situations with a team, but they are learning what to do if they are first on the scene, “When other officers get there they link up together and operate with more officers, but the first officer that’s there, they go to work. Because we feel like every second that’s wasted in an active shooter situation especially, that could be a life that’s being taken. So, we’re teaching our officers when there’s a situation like that, we’re training them how to handle it with just one officer responding until they can get more backup,” says Lt. Justin Lovvorn, an investigator with the Greenville Police Department.Â
Â
Investigators say they have never had an active shooter on any of their campuses.Â
