Lowe hits 29th homer, Rays extend Orioles’ skid to 15 games
UNDATED (AP) — Brandon Lowe hit his career-high 29th homer, Shane McClanahan won his fourth straight start, and the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-2.
The Orioles have now lost 15 straight. Baltimore dropped 14 in a row from May 18-31. The team record losing streak is 21 games, set at the beginning of the 1988 season.
Lowe connected on a two-out, two-run drive that made it 4-0 in the second. McClanahan gave up one run and five hits in five innings. Jorge López became the major’s first 14-game loser, allowing four runs over two innings.

Judge denies restraining order against Dodgers’ Bauer
UNDATED (AP) — A Los Angeles judge has sided with Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer and denied a restraining order sought by a woman who said he choked her into unconsciousness and punched her repeatedly during two sexual encounters.
Judge Dianna Gould-Saltman says that according to the 27-year-old San Diego woman’s testimony, Bauer followed the woman’s boundaries when she set them.
It’s a major victory for Bauer, but police and Major League Baseball are still investigating the incidents.

— Bill Freehan, a hero of the 1968 Detroit Tigers, has died at age 79. Freehan spent his entire 15-year career with Detroit and was an 11-time All-Star. The cause of death was not disclosed, but in recent years family members have publicly stated that Freehan had Alzheimer’s disease. In Game 5 of the ’68 World Series, Freehan tagged Lou Brock in a crucial play at home plate. Detroit won the game and the series. The result was best captured by a famous photo of pitcher Mickey Lolich jumping into the arms of his catcher.
NBA-HORNETS-ROZIER
AP source: Hornets’ Rozier agrees to 4-year, $97M extension
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Charlotte Hornets have agreed to a four-year, $97 million contract extension with guard Terry Rozier, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The six-year NBA veteran averaged a career-high 20.4 points and 4.2 assists last season in his second season with the Hornets.
Rozier went to Charlotte in a sign-and-trade deal in 2020 that included Kemba Walker going to the Boston Celtics. Rozier averaged 18 points and 4.1 assists and shot a career-high 40.7% from 3-point range in his first season with the Hornets.

AP source: Jets’ Lawson injures Achilles, will have MRI
UNDATED (AP) — New York Jets defensive end Carl Lawson was carted off the field Thursday during the team’s joint practice with the Green Bay Packers. A person with direct knowledge of the situation says Lawson injured his Achilles tendon and will have an MRI. Lawson was hurt during red-zone drills while facing the Packers offense.
Losing Lawson for an extended amount of time would be a tough blow to New York’s defensive line, considered the strength of the team.
In other NFL news:
— The Miami Dolphins’ injury-depleted receiving corps has added a reinforcement but also lost another player. Preston Williams was removed from the physically unable to perform list to take part in practice Thursday with the Atlanta Falcons. But midway through practice, Lynn Bowden Jr. walked gingerly off the field holding the back of his right leg after diving to catch a pass. He did not return. Already missing from practice were receivers Albert Wilson, DeVante Parker, Will Fuller and Isaiah Ford. Receiver Allen Hurns was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.
— The New Orleans Saints have adopted a new refund policy allowing fans to relinquish their season tickets and get their money back. The Saints intend to fill the 73,000-seat Superdome for home games this season. But they also are following local and state protocols that restrict admittance to fans who wear masks and show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test 72 hours before a game. Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry opposes mask mandates and had called for the withholding of funding for Superdome improvements unless the Saints agreed to provide refunds.
GOLF-WOMEN’S BRITISH OPEN
Olympic champ Korda shares lead at Women’s British Open
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) — Top-ranked Nelly Korda has begun her bid for a second major title by shooting 5-under 67 in the first round to share the clubhouse lead at the Women’s British Open. She is playing her first event since winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics two weeks ago. Korda rolled in a 5-foot putt at No. 18 for her eighth birdie of a round that also contained three bogeys in overcast, chilly but largely wind-free conditions over the links at Carnoustie. Korda was tied for the lead with Madelene Sagstrom. The Swede surrendered the lead by driving into a bunker at the last and missing a 10-footer for par.

Reed withdraws from Northern Trust with ankle injury
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Patrick Reed is out of The Northern Trust with an ankle injury. The PGA Tour did not have other details on the nature of the injury.
The timing is not great for Reed with Ryder Cup qualifying ending after next week. He is No. 9 in the U.S. standings and only the top six automatically qualify for the team. It also doesn’t help his FedEx Cup prospects. Reed is No. 22 in the FedEx Cup. He’s set for next week if healthy. But it now becomes a challenge to stay in the top 30 for the Tour Championship.
VIRUS OUTBREAK-NASCAR
NASCAR’s COVID-19 protocols sideline LaJoie for Michigan
UNDATED (AP) — Corey LaJoie will miss Sunday’s NASCAR race at Michigan because of COVID-19 protocols. Spire Motorsports says Josh Berry will replace LaJoie in the No. 7 Chevrolet.
LaJoie posted “Protocols” on Twitter in what appeared to be clarification that he has not tested positive.
NASCAR this week tightened its protocols on the advice of its consulting physicians as cases of COVID-19 have spiked across the country. Only essential personnel are permitted to travel to the track, guest access was cut in the garage and on the starting grid, and masks are now mandatory in all indoor spaces. Drivers are prohibited from visiting suites and their movement routes will be adjusted to avoid casual interactions with fans.
INDYCAR-IOWA RETURN
IndyCar to return to Iowa Speedway for 2022 doubleheader
UNDATED (AP) — IndyCar will return to Iowa Speedway for a July doubleheader next season.
Iowa is a short oval track beloved by fans and drivers that had fallen off the schedule after 14 years. Iowa Speedway opened in 2006 and IndyCar added it to its schedule the next season. IndyCar ran 15 races at the track, including a doubleheader last year during the pandemic.
IndyCar needed the track back on the schedule as an additional oval but couldn’t return without a sponsor. Grocery chain Hy-Vee is the title sponsor for next year’s event.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL-MURDER ARREST
Arrest made 15 years after Miami player’s fatal shooting
MIAMI (AP) — A former University of Miami football player was arrested Thursday in connection with the 2006 fatal shooting of his teammate Bryan Pata.
South Florida authorities say Rashaun Jones of Lake City was arrested on a first-degree murder warrant by Miami-Dade police and the U.S. Marshals Service. Police didn’t immediately release details about what led them to suspect the 35-year-old Jones, who played three seasons for the Hurricanes.
Pata, a 22-year-old defensive lineman, was shot several times outside of his Kendall apartment the night of Nov. 7, 2006.
