Selma Mayor George Evans came up short in his bid for re-election after serving two terms in office.

Evans says he’s proud of what he was able to get accomplished during his time as mayor. He says meeting President Barack Obama during the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday is something he’ll never forget.

Evans came in third in a crowded field of five candidates with 18% of the vote.

“I’m saddened and disappointed over the outcome,” said Evans.

“I thought I had a better chance than that, but you know life has all kind of surprises for us, and I’ve had eight years as mayor and I’m very appreciative that the voters and the citizens supported me to that extent.”

State Representative Darrio Melton and former Selma mayor James Perkins, Jr. will face-off in a runoff election October 4th.
