Auburn falls to Furman, Pacific to close War Eagle Invite

AUBURN, Ala. (auburntigers.com) – The Auburn volleyball team concluded the 2016 War Eagle Invitational with a pair of losses Saturday in Auburn Arena. The Tigers fell to Furman earlier in the day, 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 25-16), and followed with a 3-0 (25-22, 28-26, 25-17) loss to Pacific Saturday night.

Auburn (0-3) sophomore Brenna McIlroy was named to the all-tournament team. Georgia Tech captured the tournament title, finishing the weekend with a perfect record. Yellow Jacket libero London Ackermann was named the weekend’s Most Valuable Player.

AGAINST FURMAN

The Tigers led by McIlroy and freshman Gwyn Jones in Auburn’s match vs. the Paladins. McIlroy picked up 15 kills, while Jones had 10 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Libero Jesse Earl finished with a match-high 23 digs and chipped in two service aces. Senior Emily Klitzke finished with eight kills and a match-best five blocks.

Annie Bierman guided the Paladins (1-2) with 15 kills and nine digs. Nicole Mack had 12 kills and 14 digs, while libero Meg DeMaar led the team with 15 digs.

AGAINST PACIFIC

Klitzke led the Tigers with nine kills and added three blocks in the team’s loss to Pacific. McIlroy and senior Breanna Barksdale finished with eight kills apiece. Jones led the squad with four blocks and junior Courtney Crable contributed with six kills.

Pacific (2-1) had a pair of players with eight kills in Emily Baptista and Alexandra Holt. Alicja Wilk had a match-high six blocks and setter Andie Shelton totaled 30 assists.

UP NEXT

Auburn returns to the court for a Tuesday match, Aug. 30, hosting Kennesaw State at 7 p.m. in Auburn Arena. The team follows with a road trip to Louisville for the Active Ankle Challenge, Sept. 2-3. Auburn will take on Stony Brook, Santa Clara, and host Louisville.
