Lady Hornets open SWAC gauntlet with 2-1 win over PVAMU
BREHAM, Texas (bamastatesports.com) – The Alabama State women’s soccer team got off to just the conference start they had been seeking—a SWAC road victory to open conference play by defeating Prairie View A&M 2-1 on Friday night at Hohlt Park.
Senior forward Aaliyah Lewis scored twice, one in each half, including what proved to be the winning goal in a match that the Lady Hornets were able to dictate control and maintain possession through a lion’s share of the opening 60 minutes.
Her sister Ariela Lewis assisted on the first goal, her second helper in the last three matches.
The Lewis twins now co-share a team lead for most points with 12 apiece.
Prairie View A&M (0-8 overall, 0-1 SWAC) put more pressure on in the later stages of the match, cutting the deficit in half on a penalty kick after a hand ball was called by the referees.
Alabama State (2-7 overall, 1-0 SWAC) extended their winning streak in head-to-head meetings with the Lady Panthers to three straight dating back to last season’s 3-2 home win on Senior Day last Oct. 25.
“We established a rhythm,” said ASU head women’s soccer coach Jodie Smith.
“We were in control of the match and went into halftime with the lead. We got an early goal in the second half and then had two or three other chances to get ahead even more. A 2-0 lead can be the most unsafe lead is soccer, because if the other team gets one, they are right there again. We battled, played 90 minutes and won in a tough place to win. I don’t think we’ve won on the road here. So it’s a trail through adversity on the road.”
Next, Alabama State will play at conference rival Texas Southern on Sunday at 1 p.m.
