Auburn fans happy after victory over Arkansas

Kerryon Johnson (21). Auburn football vs Arkansas State on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016 in Auburn, Ala. Dakota Sumpter/Auburn AthleticsAuburn fans got a long awaited surprise Saturday when the Tigers beat the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Tigers took control of the game from the beginning, beating the Razorbacks 56-3.

Fans watching the game said it was like watching an entirely different team.

“I saw the 2013 team again, is what I saw,” said fan Rusty Buys. “It was a terrific team, they were highly motivated, they were prepared, they played with energy, they played with intensity, they just executed. They couldn’t have done any better.”

The victory is a far cry from the beginning of the season, one that had many fans questioning Head Coach Gus Malzahn’s leadership. The win over his old team seems to have put several of those same fans back on the Gus Bus.

“I was optimistic that Gus could pull it back together, but after not really seeing any improvement in the play calling all of last year and towards the end of the previous season I was starting to get a little dejected, thinking maybe it was time for a change,” said fan Ryan Little. “But he made the necessary adjustments and it shows he still has what it takes to be a successful head coach.”

Even though one game can’t predict the outcome of a season, the Arkansas game has Auburn fans hopefully. Mostly, fans are looking forward to what this victory could mean for the Iron Bowl.

“I think last night’s Auburn Team could’ve beaten yesterday’s Bama team,” said Little with a shrug.

“If they make some mistakes, and we do some things right, we can win that game,” added Buys. “We can run the tables from here out.”

“We’re gonna be caught up in the emotion, and we’re all gonna be really excited, and it’s going to be two teams going at it, said fan Trey Rush. “But at the end of the day, if we just execute, we could win.”

The Tigers next game is at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford next Saturday to take on the Ole’ Miss Rebels.
