UA: Campus Panic Caused by Rumors, Student’s Call

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) – The University of Alabama is providing details on a campus panic that resulted in a dorm being searched and some students missing classes this week.

Someone posted a threatening social media message that quickly spread among students. Authorities are investigating the source.

A statement released Thursday night by President Judy Bonner says that amid the panic a female student in Tutwiler Hall called her father in Birmingham. She told him people dressed as clowns had entered the dormitory with guns, and he called police.

Police arrived within moments but nothing was found.

Bonner says officers also talked to the student, who told police she saw something on social media that made her think the threat was real.

A male student has since been arrested on charges of making another threat.
