Oak Park Prepares For Montgomery Botanical Gardens

It’s been almost a year since the ground breaking for Montgomery’s botanical garden.
Â
The project is coming along, and pretty soon the non-profit organization funding the garden will need your help.Â
Â
It might not look like much, but there’s been a lot of behind the scenes work on the upcoming botanical gardens.Â
Â
The Montgomery Botanical Gardens Club is finalizing the lease with the city and wants to put plants in as early as next month.
Â
The Vice President of the group’s board Heather Davis says they already have almost 100 volunteers.Â
Â
“We have people lined up and we’re actually going to have an event in October so that people can come and learn more about where we are. Our meeting will be at the planetarium. It’ll allow people to look at the opportunities to volunteer. We’ve got several committees, more than several committees,” said Davis.
Â
The plan is to eventually cover the entire park in different exhibits.
Some people at the park are already excited about the future of the city’s oldest park.Â
Â
“It’ll be nice and lovely and colorful. Right now it’s kind of just plain. You don’t really see that many people coming here. If it was advertised  yeah, I believe it would help,” said Kadiajah Washington
Â
“It’s something I’d like to see. It should be something better in the community for the kids,” said Martavious Meadows.
Â
The state recently announced a new tourism initiative called the Alabama Gardens Trail. It will highlight different gardens through the state, including ones in Birmingham and Dothan.Â
Â
Davis hopes Montgomery’s new garden can make it onto that trail.
Â
“We want it not only attached to that but bird watchers and all of the others that alabama is putting together. As many as we possibly can and definitely the botanical gardens,” said Davis.Â
Â
The board still has to draw up and vote on the final plan, but that should be ready soon.
Â
If you’re interested in helping the new garden, that meeting will take place on October 23 at the planetarium at 5:30.Â
