Church Adopts Lanier Football Team, Serves Pre-game Meal
THE SIDNEY LANIER POETS GET A LITTLE PRE-GAME SUPPORT FROM A COMMUNITY THAT HAS TAKEN THEM UNDER THEIR WING.
The chicken is hot on the grill and the food is getting prepped in the kitchen.
It’s an important occasion.
First Baptist Church in Montgomery adopted the entire Lanier High School football team and they are coming for a pregame meal.
“We’re a very community oriented church and get involved in the schools, and we’re urging other churches to do the same. To adopt these football teams and let these guys get inside the church and see what the church is about and just go from there,” said FBC Associate Youth Pastor, Spencer Jones.
For some of the members at the church, like former football star Merrill Ingram, it’s personal.
“I was raised in an orphanage in Selma, Alabama, and I know what it’s like to not have anyone there for you. We just wanted to show the boys that we care about them and help them to have a great season,” said Ingram one of the cooks grilling for the team.
The team comes in to not only be fed physically, but also spiritually.
And get the support they need, not only on the field, but in life in general.
“We enjoy the meal and they talk to us about a lot of things especially about life and Christ, Jesus Christ,” said football player Quintarious Campbell.
And for that, they are truly grateful.
“Really a blessing. And you know, it costs a lot to feed a football team, so you know they actually called us and proposed that we come down and have dinner. And I think it’s a great thing for our kids,” said La
nier Head Coach Marvin Cunningham.
