Rally Calls for Federal Judge’s Resignation

Several Alabama organizations are calling for the resignation of a federal judge accused of beating his wife in an Atlanta hotel room. On Thursday morning, they’re rallying at a Georgia courthouse, saying Mark Fuller should resign or be removed.
Judge Mark Fuller serves the Middle District of Alabama, and presided over the bribery trial of former Governor Don Siegelman. He hasn’t been hearing cases since the August night when his wife called Atlanta Police and told them he was hitting her. The courts have reassigned his caseload, but some activist groups say it isn’t enough.
The Birmingham NAACP, National Action Network, and members of the Outcast Voters League say they want Fuller off the bench for good. They’re also calling for a magistrate to rescind an order that Fuller’s criminal record be expunged if he goes to domestic violence counseling.
Rally-goers say they also want a response from former President George Bush, who appointed Fuller back in 2002.
These groups aren’t the first to ask for Fuller’s resignation. High-ranking Republican officials from Senators Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby to Governor Robert Bentley have said he should step down.
Fuller has not spoken publicly about the accusations. His attorney has not said if Fuller will step down.
