Troy University Celebrates Homecoming with Tailgate, Pep Rally

It’s homecoming at Troy University! It’s an exciting time for students, alumni and fans. Friday afternoon, the campus hosted a tailgate and pep rally to get ready for tomorrow’s game.
Troy students definitely have school spirit. You can feel it, see it and hear it here on campus this homecoming
It’s that time of year again…homecoming at Troy University. And students decked out in cardinal, black and silver are taking part of a variety of activities. The Student Government Association put on what they called a tailgate for the troops.
“It’s a lot of troy spirit,” says student Lavonda Samuels. “A lot of interaction with different organizations and sorrorities and fraternities and just showing that we care about our school.”
Several on-campus organizations made foods from different cultures for the tailgate. A donation was taken from each student at the entrance.
“All the money that’s raised, our alumni is going to be doubling that and then giving that scholarship to a student,” says Troy’s Vice President of on-campus activities, Heath Barton.
Soon after the tailgate, students made their way to Trojan Arena for the pep rally, where Head Football Coach Larry Blakeney received a standing ovation.
“They will lead us to victory tomorrow,” Blakeney said of the 19 seniors on the football team.
Blakeney recently announced this season will be his last as head football coach and students have mixed feelings about his retirement.
“It’s a 23 year run,” says student Hunter Stewart. “It’s been good. It’s sad to see coach Blakeney go but with the new athletic director and everything else, maybe they’ll bring some new life into this program.”
“It is very sad,” says Chi-Omega member Zahra Qureshi. “I actually work at the towers so I’ve just been kind of listening to athletes and they were really taken a back by it and kind of shocked about it.”
The Trojans are off to and 0 and 5 start but that’s not keeping fans from believing in the football team.
“It’s a rough start, 0 and 5,” says fan Wayne Sumrall. ‘But I think that changes tomorrow.”
