Svitolina tops Halep to reach US Open quarters
NEW YORK (AP) — No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina (svih-toh-LEE’-nah) has defeated two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep (HAL’-ehp) 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open.
Svitolina has never won a Grand Slam tournament. She had lost twice before to the 12th-seeded Halep in majors. Svitolina has emerged as a contender at Flushing Meadows. She has not dropped a set in the tournament.
In other Sunday highlights, Leylah Fernandez is taking on 2106 champion and No. 16 seed Angelique Kerber. The 18-year-old from Canada is coming off an upset victory over defending champion Naomi Osaka. And No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka plays her fourth-round match against Elise Mertens.
Jack Sock has withdrawn from men’s doubles a day after he was forced to retire with an injury in his singles match against Alexander Zverev. The American was scheduled to play with Neal Skupski on Sunday. The team of Dominik Koepfer and Emil Ruusuvuori took the walkover win.

Yankees put Loaisiga on IL with strained rotator cuff
UNDATED (AP) — The Yankees have placed reliever Jonathan Loaisiga (loh-AY’-see-gah) on the 10-day injured list because of a strained right rotator cuff.
Manager Aaron Boone said Loaisiga experienced some pain Saturday morning after he surrendered a game-tying homer to Jorge Mateo in the seventh inning of Friday night’s 4-3 victory over Baltimore. An MRI showed the strain and Loaisiga was given a cortisone injection. Boone said Loaisiga will not throw for 10 days, and he is hoping the hard-throwing right-hander can return this season.
New York began the day on top of the AL wild-card standings, a half-game ahead of Boston.

— Twins manager Rocco Baldelli plans to leave the team to return home to Minnesota for the birth of his child. Baldelli says he will be in the dugout for the start of Minnesota’s game at Tampa Bay but could depart before it ends. The schedule called for Baldelli to head to the clubhouse to prepare for his flight about three hours after the scheduled first pitch. Veteran coach Bill Evers will fill in for Baldelli, who may miss a four-game series that starts Monday night at Cleveland.

Cowboys’ Martin likely to miss opener after positive test
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys are expected to open the season at Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay without right guard Zack Martin after the four-time All-Pro tested positive for COVID-19.
Martin is the latest of several Dallas starters to test positive and miss time, but the others have since returned. Coach Mike McCarthy said news of Martin’s positive test came Saturday. Backup tackle Brandon Knight is also on the COVID-19 list.
Third-year pro Connor McGovern is the likely replacement for Martin as the Cowboys get set for Thursday’s visit to the Bucs and seven-time champion quarterback Tom Brady.
T25 COLLEGE FOOTBALL-SCHEDULE
No. 9 Notre Dame visits Florida State
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Ninth-ranked Notre Dame visits Florida State in Sunday’s only college football game featuring a ranked team.
Notre Dame is returning to being an independent and the Fighting Irish want to show they have found a transfer quarterback — Jack Coan from Wisconsin — and a cohesive offensive line that can lead the team back to the College Football Playoff. Coan was 12-6 in his starts with the Badgers, completing 68% of his passes, third all-time at Wisconsin.
Meanwhile, in Year 2 for Florida State coach Mike Norvell, there are pressing questions on both sides of the ball. The Seminoles are looking to pull off an upset to spark the rebuild. Quarterback McKenzie Milton is listed as a co-starter. He hasn’t played football since suffering a traumatic leg injury in November 2018 while at UCF.
Florida State will honor coaching great Bobby Bowden, who died at 91 of pancreatic cancer on Aug. 8, by wearing a back helmet bumper with Bowden’s signature. The “Bobby” signature and his trademark straw hat will also be painted on each 25-yard line. Bowden won national titles in 1993 and ’99 during his 34 years as Florida State’s head coach.

U.S. trims deficit at Solheim Cup even as Korda struggles
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — The United States rallied at the Solheim Cup on Sunday morning, winning three of the four alternate-shot matches to cut into the sizable lead defending champion Europe built on Day One.
Lexi Thompson’s curling 30-foot birdie putt on the par-4 17th closed out a 2-and-1 victory for herself and teammate Brittany Altomare. It highlighted a stirring rally for the Americans as the U.S. pulled with 6 1/2-5 1/2 heading into the afternoon four-ball session.

Verstappen’s like royalty as Dutch king watches home win
ZANDVOORT, Netherlands (AP) — Max Verstappen thrilled his home crowd by winning the Netherlands Grand Prix in style to reclaim the Formula One championship lead from Lewis Hamilton.
The Red Bull driver’s leading seventh win of the season and 17th of his career moved him three points ahead of the defending champion, who finished second but softened the blow with a bonus point for fastest lap. Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas was third.
Verstappen started from pole position for a season-leading seventh time, and sixth in the past seven races, courtesy of a brilliant qualifying session. He leads Hamilton 7-4 for wins.
