Last Day for Alabama National Fair

Today is the last day for the Alabama National Fair. And it’s Alabama News Network school day, which means students up to 12th grade can get in for five dollars.

5-year-old Gabe Russell and 8-year-old William James tell us which rides they’re most looking forward to riding on their day off from school.

“The ferris wheel,” says James.

“Today, we’re going to go on the slide,” says Russell. “You just get on the big thing over there and you just go down.”

Students up to 12th grade can get into the fair for $5.00 today. And some tell us the break from school is much needed.

“It’s so great,” says senior Braidyn Lazenur. “it’s really nice, especially during senior year when you get to have that type of little break and we’re just so excited.”

And all of the fun and excitement is also for a good cause. Jeff Samuel is the President of the Kiwanis Club, the group putting on the fair,  and says all proceeds from the fair go to benefit local charities in Central Alabama.

“This is our only fundraiser,” he says. “And it’s big. Last year we provided 400 thousand dollars to charities in Montgomery.”

An extra day was added to the fair this year and Samuel expects even more money to be raised because of it.

“We talked to the people than run the carnival and all that and they agreed to stay an extra day so they’re delighted. It takes extra manpower than the Kiwanis Club provides but the guys are willing to commit.”

Students say they hope next year’s fair also falls on a holiday.

“I aint got to go to school, no homework, just come ride some rides,” says Jacob East.

Adults are $10 dollars today and kids 5 and under are free with a paid adult.
The fair closes at 9 but you’re able to ride the rides until 10PM
