The general election is now just 21 days away and one of the most heated races this year is the race for Alabama Attorney General. Now, some polls indicate that race is neck and neck.

Joe Hubbard was a lesser known state representative from Montgomery less than one year ago. Fast forward to today, and one poll says he is tied with Luther Strange in a race to fill one of the most important positions in the state. But Strange is still showing strong support.

A new poll by Hickman Analytics shows the Attorney General’s race is up for grabs. Joe Hubbard says while is pleased with the polling numbers, he says he’s not surprised.

“I think the Attorney General took his reelection for granted,” Strange says. “I think he takes his office for granted. I think he believes this is just another stepping stone to a higher office.”

Hubbard put his name in the race for Attorney General this past February. He says he has a plan to take on the increasing violent crime in Alabama. Political Analyst Steve Flowers says Strange’s stance on gambling may be negatively affecting his campaign.

“The polling also indicates, and people around the state know this, that Strange’s position on the gaming position has hurt him a lot in this election,” Flowers explains. “Even people who perceive themselves as very conservative and religious people have come to accept the gaming issue.”

In campaign ads, Luther Strange says crime is down, public corruption convictions are up and drug labs are being shut down. Strange also says Hubbard is a liberal who is pushing President Obama’s agenda. But Hubbard says this race isn’t about blue and red.

“This race is not about politics. Violent crime doesn’t discriminate between democrats and republicans.”

Hickman Analytics has been accurate when predicting several races including the race for  Lieutenant Governor of Alabama back in 2006, when Jim Folsom beat Luther Strange.

The deadline to register to vote for this upcoming election is October 20th.
