Selma Police Chief John Brock has announced his retirement.

Brock says the city’s new mayor, Darrio Melton, has decided to move in a different direction and asked Brock to step down.

Brock has spent 31 years with the department being promoted to chief in September 2015. He called his time spent with the department “a great ride.”

Some details are still being worked out regarding Brock’s last day, but it will be no later than mid-January. The chief says he isn’t sure what he’ll do in retirement, but admitted he’s open to other law enforcement opportunities.

Longtime Lt. Johnny King has been named interim chief until a permanent replacement can be hired.
