Stay Alert For Sex Offenders On Halloween

Safety is a top concern for parents on Halloween night.
Part of that includes being aware of known sex offenders while out trick or treating.
There are just over 400 registered sex offenders in the Montgomery area.
There are no laws to keep them from participating in halloween, that’s why the sheriff’s office says it’s important for parents to be informed.
It’s one of the nations most popular holidays, as kids go door to door to get candy and treats.
Chief Deputy Derrick Cunningham says that even though sex offenders live behind some of those doors, they know the rules.
“We haven’t had a problem in the past and I don’t want to have a problem for the future. But as far as being a parent, plan your route, know what’s out there and know where you’re going,” said Cunningham.
You can check for sex offenders in your area by visiting the Sheriff’s Office website.
Just type in your address to find out where all the registered offenders are in your area.
The site works for everyone, even if you’re not in Montgomery, or even Alabama.
“By law the only thing that we’re supposed to do is notify you of their presence and where they live at. And that’s what we’re doing by putting it on the website,” said Cunningham.
Parents like Kyle Beard say they will check the site and do whatever it takes this Halloween to make sure they have a safe evening.
“Any parent is going to want a positive environment anyway so you don’t have to worry about things like that. So we want it to be fun but we also, when we were kids we didn’t have to worry about that. Our parents just kind of let us go free, but now we do. We think about that,” said Beard.
Some states like Georgia, Florida and North Carolina prohibit sex offenders from even decorating their homes and participating in the holiday.
