Voters to Pick New Secretary of State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Republican state Rep. John Merrill and Democrat Lula Albert-Kaigler face off Tuesday in the race for Alabama secretary of state.
The race for the open seat has been quiet compared to the hard-fought GOP primary that saw a trio of candidates arguing over who was the most Republican.
Merrill is a legislator, bank executive and former spokesman for Tuscaloosa County schools. The 50-year-old said he will defend the state’s photo voter ID requirement. He said he also wants to make the corporations division of the office, which process records, more efficient.
Albert-Kaigler retired from the U.S. Army Reserves and is a small business owner. She said it should be easier to vote by absentee ballot. The 69-year-old said she wants to provide voters with neutral information about upcoming elections.
