New Disaster Preparedness Curriculum Ready to Launch in Pike Co.

A new curriculum aims to prepare students for natural disasters and developers in Pike County believe the lesson plans the first of it’s kind.

Pike County Extension Office and Emergency Management Agent came up with the curriculum. It’s been locally supported and funded thanks o Troy University, the Pike County Commission and Troy City Council.

It’s called KIDS-that stands for Kids Instructed  in Disaster Safety.

The pilot program will start this month at Troy Elementary and Goshen Elementary. Teachers will given four lessons with hands on activities that last between 30 minutes to an hour.

Grant Lyons, Pike County Extension Coordinator said, “If they understand the science behind the science then they have a better chance of understanding the severity that it could bring which in turn is going to help them be more prepared for it when the time comes.”

Developers say they haven’t found any curriculum like this in the country. It is geared towards students K-12 but can be adapted to any audience.

Three total modules are in the works. The last two are centered around technological and man made disasters. They will be taught most likely next fall in Pike County middle and high schools
