Ala. Candidates Riding Differently Before Election
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Republican Gov. Robert Bentley is crisscrossing the state by plane to rally support before Tuesday’s election, while Democratic challenger Parker Griffith is campaigning by car in north Alabama.
Bentley wore a sports coat and open-collar shirt rather than his customary dark suit and tie for a campaign stop at lunchtime Monday on the Capitol steps. Bentley says he’s relaxed about the election and believes it will turn out fine.
Griffith says a plane trip isn’t in his budget. He’s raised about one-tenth as much in donations as Bentley. Griffith says that no matter how the election turns out, he’s changed the political conversation in the state to focus on creating jobs, expanding Medicaid and creating a state lottery.
The last time a Democrat won the governor’s office was 1998.
