ASU Football Coach Reggie Barlow Asked to Resign

MONTGOMERY, AL—- Alabama State head football coach Reggie Barlow was asked to resign or be terminated at the end of the season by Interim Athletic Director Melvin Hines, according to Barlow’s attorney Don Jackson.
“Coach Barlow is disappointed, surprised, and hurt by the actions of the interim Athletic Director,” said Jackson.
Barlow has no plans to resign, according to Jackson.
The Alabama State coach was leaving football practice and campus today between 4:30 and 5:00pm Tuesday afternoon when Hines called Barlow into his office to deliver the ultimatum, according to Jackson.
Barlow signed a three-year contract extension through 2017 with Alabama State in September worth $172,420.
Barlow’s attorney says that Hines told Barlow that his new contract is not binding until approved by the Alabama State Board of Trustees. Jackson claims that it’s either a legally binding contract or promissory fraud.
Jackson says that Hines’ decision came from recieving phone calls from people who were opposed to Barlow’s new contract.
Jackson released the following statement:
“Coach Barlow is prepared to honor the terms of his commitment to the University, his student-athletes and the Montgomery community. He considers Mr. Hines’ actions to be an intentional effort to avoid the terms of his contract with the University and outside of his authority as Athletic Director. Mr. Hines signed the contract voluntarily over a month ago and led Coach Barlow to believe that he acted on behalf of the University. Coach Barlow (either) has a legally binding three year contract or Mr. Hines has engaged in a textbook act of promissory fraud”
Barlow has a 46-41 overall record for Alabama State since becoming head coach in 2007.
