The National Council for Home Safety and Security releases its 2017 list of the safest cities in the state and a city in Marengo County ranks high on the list.
The city of Demopolis ranks among the top 50 safest cities in Alabama — coming in at number 49.
“It says a lot about the people in Demopolis. It says a lot about our police officers, law enforcement. They do a very good job,” said Demopolis resident Mack Fitz-Gerald.
Cities were ranked based on the number of violent and property crimes per 100,000 people and the rate of violent and property crimes — per 1,000 people.
“They’re using UCR codes, Uniform Crime Reporting system where they’re basically using your crime data that you submit to the FBI,” said Police Chief Tommie Reese.
Mayor John Laney says having a safe city is good for residents and good for business.
“The state of Alabama has over a thousand cities in the state so that puts us in some very good company,” he said.
“Cities that are known for their quality of life, their safety.”
