Judge Releases Richard Scrushy from Probation

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – A federal judge says HealthSouth Corp. founder Richard Scrushy doesn’t have to serve the final eight months of his probation for bribery.

AL.com reports a judge on Friday approved Scrushy’s request to end supervised probation early.

Prosecutors didn’t object and probation officials supported the move.

Scrushy and former Gov. Don Siegelman were convicted in a bribery scheme eight years ago. Siegelman remains in prison but Scrushy served about five years and now lives in Texas.

Scrushy sought an end to probation arguing he hasn’t violated any conditions since his release from custody in 2010.

Scrushy remains under an order to pay HealthSouth almost $3 billion. He was found liable in a civil lawsuit for the fraud that nearly wrecked the company while he was CEO.
