Police: No charges Against Teen Who Left Newborn Outside

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Jefferson County authorities aren’t planning any charges against a teenager suspected of leaving her newborn daughter outside last week.
Sheriff’s officials said Monday the decision against pursuing charges was made because of evidence and mitigating circumstances.
The Department of Human Resources will make decisions about the child’s custody in the future.
The decision comes almost a week after residents found an infant dressed in a short-sleeved outfit and wrapped in a towel in their yard in 40-degree temperatures.
Authorities determined the mother is a 15-year-old who hid her pregnancy from her parents. She gave birth at home in a bathroom before slipping outside to leave the child near her neighbor’s front door.
The baby is in good condition.
