The National Weather Service says a tornado that ripped through Mullica Hill, New Jersey, is believed to have had an EF-3 rating, with winds of up to 150 miles per hour. The service released its preliminary report on the Wednesday evening tornado after confirming at least seven tornadoes in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The remnants of Hurricane Ida stirred up at least one other tornado in Massachusetts. The weather service said the Mullica Hill tornado stretched for 12.6 miles over a span of 20 minutes and was as wide as 400 yards.

Fisk Jubilee Singers get $1.5M gift to start endowment

The Fisk Jubilee Singers, a vocal group whose tradition dates back 150 years, is celebrating a $1.5 million anonymous donation. Fisk University announced the gift as one of the largest donations ever made to the group. The musical tradition began in 1871 as students who sang slave spirituals as a way to raise money for the historically Black university. They recently earned their first Grammy Award this year as well for an album celebrating their 150th anniversary. The money will be used to establish a permanent endowment named after their longtime musical director Paul T. Kwami.

The president of the U.N. Security Council says the U.N.’s most powerful body will not take its focus off Afghanistan this month and “the real litmus test” for the new Taliban government will be how it treats women and girls. Ambassador Geraldine Byrne Nason of Ireland said Wednesday that the protection and promotion of human rights for women “must be at the very heart of our collective response to the crisis.” Under the Taliban’s previous rule from 1996 to 2001, women were not allowed to go to school, work outside the home or leave homes without a male escort.  Bryne Nason said: “My question is, will the Taliban be different, and that’s the real question. We haven’t seen any evidence of that.”
