The Taliban fighters who rolled into Afghanistan’s capital and other cities in recent days appear awestruck by the towering apartment blocks, modern office buildings and shopping malls. When the Taliban last seized power, in 1996, the country had been ravaged by civil war and the capital was in ruins. Afghanistan has been transformed in the two decades since the U.S.-led invasion drove the militants from power. A new generation has come of age under a Western-backed government more open to women’s rights, technology and economic development. Many now fear those gains will be rolled back, even as the Taliban have signaled greater moderation.

Ex-Nevada inmate gets life for 1984 Colorado hammer killings

A former Nevada prison inmate has been sentenced to three consecutive life sentences in the long-unsolved 1984 hammer killings of three Colorado family members, including a 7-year-old girl, inside their suburban Denver home. Sixty-one-year-old Alex Ewing was convicted Aug. 6 of first-degree murder after a two-day trial in which prosecutors contended Ewing used a hammer and a knife to kill Bruce Bennett, his wife, Debra, and daughter Melissa in the Bennetts’ home. Melissa Bennett also was raped, prosecutors said. Another daughter, 3-year-old Vanessa, was beaten in the head with a hammer as were her parents and sister but survived the attack.
