Ranging Bull: ‘Barney’ eludes capture days after farm escape

An escaped bull has eluded capture for several days on Long Island despite attempts to lure the roaming animal with grain and a cow in heat. Police began responding to calls about the 1,500-pound bull running loose Tuesday morning after it broke through the fence of a local farm. Residents have spotted the dark-coated bull nicknamed Barney walking across fields, roads and suburban front yards. And it briefly shut down a portion of Sunrise Highway. Teams have searched the area about 50 miles east of New York City on foot and on horseback.

Interior secretary: Drought demands investment, conservation

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland says confronting the historic drought that has a firm grip on the American West requires a heavy federal infrastructure investment to protect existing water supplies. But she says it also depends on efforts at all levels of government to reduce demand by promoting water efficiency and recycling. Western states are gripped by the worst drought in modern history, including most of western Colorado. Haaland spoke at the start of a three-day visit to Colorado that includes a visit to the Bureau of Land Management’s new headquarters in Grand Junction, which was established by the Trump administration in 2019.
