Mississippi dad Rhett Shaffette says he’s already had the best Father’s Day gift: His daughter is thriving, eight months after getting part of his liver. Twelve-year-old Cecilia received the transplant after nearly losing her life to internal bleeding. After years in frustration on the wait list, the family in Carriere, Mississippi, began searching for a partial liver from a living donor. Her father Rhett turned out to be the perfect match. Only 66 of the 500 liver transplants performed on children last year were from living donors, and only 22 of those were from biological parents. Pediatric surgeons are trying to encourage more anonymous living donors.
