Broncos star linebacker Von Miller returned to the lineup with a pair of sacks last week. Miller showed he’s truly back at his weekly podium appearance this week when he cracked wise on his teammates just like old times. Miller said he didn’t have any advice for top draft pick Patrick Surtain II in advance of his first NFL start Sunday other than to offer him some style suggestions to upgrade his wardrobe. And Miller went on a rift about stealing sacks from his teammates who can’t reach the quarterback quite as fast as he can even at age 32.

Chiefs’ Mathieu ready to take field after COVID-19 bout

All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu was cleared the day before the Chiefs beat the Browns 33-29 at Arrowhead Stadium, and coach Andy Reid made the prudent decision to hold him out after missing nearly two weeks of practice. And while Mathieu would have loved to be on the field last weekend, he acknowledged that the coaching staff made the right decision. Mathieu has been practicing all week, though, and will be on the field when the Chiefs visit the Ravens for a Sunday night showcase.

A’s hold off Royals 12-10 to keep pace in AL wild-card race

Matt Olson hit a two-run homer, Josh Harrison drove in three runs and Elvis Andrus had four hits as the Oakland Athletics beat the Kansas City Royals 12-10. Oakland ended a three-game slide and remained 3 1/2 games back of Toronto, Boston and New York in the AL wild-card chase. Mark Canha and Tony Kemp also drove in runs off losing pitcher Carlos Hernandez. Sean Manaea also struggled on the mound but picked up the win. Andrew Chafin got the final four outs for the A’s for his seventh save. Salvador Perez provided the biggest highlight for Kansas City with his 44th homer of the season.
