In the 15 minutes before Alabama makes its first Final Four appearance in school history, there probably won’t be many warm and fuzzy moments in the locker room. Instead, there will be insults. Lots of them.
Alabama coach Nate Oats had become comfortable coaching at Romulus High School outside of Detroit. His desire to take any Division I college coaching job waned through the years before he got an opportunity on Bobby Hurley’s staff at Buffalo. Now, Oats has the Crimson Tide in the Final Four with two other coaches who have high school coaching roots.
Grant Nelson made himself a part of Alabama basketball history with his dominant performance against North Carolina. The senior forward though is hoping to be part of another important chapter — getting the Crimson Tide into the Final Four for the first time.
Mark Sears led the highest-scoring offense in the country with 30 points, and fourth-seeded Alabama had no problem making shots in its NCAA Tournament opener, racing past No. 13 seed Charleston 109-96.
Freshman Essence Cody had season bests with 20 points and 14 rebounds and No. 8 seed Alabama defeated No. 9 Florida State 82-74 in the first round of the women’s NCAA Tournament.
John Poulakidas scored 28 points, Samson Aletan made a key block during a wild scramble in the final seconds, and 13th-seeded Yale beat No. 4 seed Auburn 78-76 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Auburn’s Chad Baker-Mazara was ejected for a flagrant 2 foul less than four minutes into the fourth-seeded Tigers’ first-round NCAA Tournament game against No. 13 seed Yale. Replays showed that Baker-Mazara appeared to throw an elbow toward Yale’s August Mahoney as the pair ran downcourt. Auburn coach Bruce Pearl questioned why officials decided the foul merited an ejection.
Jaedon LeDee dominated inside on the way to 32 points, Lamont Butler added 15 and No. 5 seed San Diego State held off 12th-seeded UAB 69-65 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Kansas got a kind whistle at the end and Nicolas Timberlake made both his free throws to help the Jayhawks hold off Samford for a 93-89 victory in the NCAA Tournament.
