Kluber gets 100th win, Yankees sweep Tigers to reach .500

UNDATED (AP) — Corey Kluber (KLOO’-bur) handcuffed Detroit batters to gain his 100th career win with his most dominant performance since 2018 as the New York Yankees beat the Tigers 2-0.

Kluber looked like the pitcher who won AL Cy Young Awards with Cleveland in 2014 and 2017, before injuries wrecked his 2019 and 2020 seasons. The 35-year-old right-hander allowed two hits in eight innings, walked one and struck out 10 to reach double digits for the 47th time but first since Sept. 24, 2018.

The Yankees got back to .500 by completing their first series sweep this season.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Max Scherzer pitched a five-hitter, Ryan Zimmerman hit a three-run homer and the Washington Nationals defeated the Miami Marlins 3-1. Scherzer carried a shutout into the ninth inning before Isan Diaz led off with a home run. The right-hander struck out nine without a walk and hit a batter. It was the 12th career complete game for Scherzer, who got loud applause from the approximately 8,500 fans at Nationals Park when he came out to start the ninth. Yan Gomes added two hits for Washington, which improved to .500 with its fourth straight win.

— Carlos Martínez pitched eight marvelous innings, Harrison Bader hit an early three-run homer and the St. Louis Cardinals blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 for a three-game sweep. St. Louis has won seven straight against the Pirates and is 20-6 versus Pittsburgh since the start of the 2019 season. The sweep was the second in three series for the Cardinals, who have won eight of 10 overall. Bader’s home run off rookie Wil Crowe came with one out in the second inning. Martínez allowed five hits and two walks. He struck out three and retired his final eight batters. Alex Reyes retired the side in order in the ninth for his seventh save.

— Marcus Semien homered and drove in four runs as Toronto finished off a three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves with a 7-2 win after Blue Jays newcomer George Springer exited early. There was no immediate announcement on why Joe Panik pinch-hit for Springer in the sixth inning. Springer was the designated hitter for the fourth consecutive game since making his Toronto debut Wednesday. The 2017 World Series MVP signed a team-record $150 million, six-year deal with the Blue Jays this offseason but missed time because of a strained oblique and quadriceps strain. Semien hit a two-run homer to help Toronto win for the seventh time in nine games.

Braves put catchers Travis d’Arnaud, Alex Jackson on IL

UNDATED (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have put catchers Travis d’Arnaud (dahr-NOH’) and Alex Jackson on the injured list.

D’Arnaud was placed on the 60-day IL Sunday with a left thumb sprain after getting hurt on a tag play at the plate in the sixth inning of Saturday night’s game against Toronto. Jackson, who replaced d’Arnaud in the game, went on the 10-day IL with a strained left hamstring.

Catcher William Contreras was recalled from the Braves’ alternate site and started Sunday against the Blue Jays. Catcher Jeff Mathis had his contract purchased from alternate site.

In other MLB news:

— Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Dustin May has been put on the 10-day injured list with an arm ailment. May threw just 27 pitches Saturday night in Milwaukee. Manager Dave Roberts said May felt “a shooting sensation” through his arm on a curveball he threw. The 23-year-old May is 1-1 with a 2.74 ERA in five starts this season. He joins a crowd of Dodgers pitchers on the injured list that also includes David Price, Joe Kelly and several more.

— Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert exited Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Indians with a strained right hip flexor. Robert fell to the ground after beating out an infield single to third base in the first inning. He was helped off the field while putting no weight on his right leg. X-rays were negative, and he will be evaluated Monday. Adam Eaton replaced Robert as a pinch-runner and moved to right field while Leury García took over in center.

— The Milwaukee Brewers have boosted their depleted catching situation by reacquiring Jacob Nottingham from the Seattle Mariners. Seattle had claimed Nottingham off waivers from Milwaukee last week but then designated him for assignment. The Brewers announced Sunday they acquired him for cash. Nottingham is in their starting lineup for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Brewers have placed catchers Omar Narváez and Manny Piña on the injured list over the last week.

— Oakland Athletics left-hander Jesús Luzardo will be off the mound for a while. And maybe off video games, too. Luzardo is out indefinitely after breaking the pinkie finger on his pitching hand while playing a video game. An X-ray after Saturday’s loss to Baltimore showed a hairline fracture and Luzardo was put on the 10-day injured list Sunday. Oakland manager Bob Melvin said Luzardo was playing a video game before his start yesterday and accidentally bumped his hand on a desk.

NBA-BUCKS-ANTETOKOUNMPO RETURNS

Antetokounmpo back in action for Bucks’ game vs. Nets

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Two-time reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH’-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON’-poh) has returned from a sprained right ankle to play for the Milwaukee Bucks in the first of two straight games with the Eastern Conference-leading Brooklyn Nets. The 6-foot-11 forward is in the Bucks’ starting lineup Sunday.

Antetokounmpo injured his ankle in the opening minute of the Bucks’ 143-136 loss to the Houston Rockets on Thursday. The injury caused him to miss the Bucks’ 108-98 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Friday.

Milwaukee is missing Bobby Portis, who is out with a stomach illness.

The Bucks began Sunday in third place in the East, 3 1/2 games behind the Nets and three behind the Philadelphia 76ers.

Pacers hand Thunder largest home loss in NBA history, 152-95

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma City Thunder suffered the largest home loss in NBA history Saturday night when they fell to the Indiana Pacers 152-95. The Pacers scored their most points in a game since joining the NBA in 1976.

Domantas Sabonis had a triple-double in the first half and finished with 26 points, 19 rebounds and 14 assists. Indiana led by 67 points with 4:12 remaining before the Thunder scored the game’s next 10 points.

The 57-point final margin topped the previous record of 56, set by the SuperSonics over the Rockets in 1986 and matched by the Celtics over the Bulls in 2018.

The NBA record for a loss is 68 points.

Indiana shot 65.5% from the field — the highest percentage for an opponent in Thunder history.

The Pacers’ previous record was 150 points against Denver in 1982.

CAITLYN JENNER-TRANSGENDER ATHLETES

Jenner says transgender girls in women’s sports is ‘unfair’

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Caitlyn Jenner, the former Olympic champion and reality TV personality now running for California governor, said she opposes transgender girls competing in girls’ sports at school.

Jenner, a 1976 decathlon Olympic gold medalist who came out as a transgender woman in 2015, told a TMZ reporter on Saturday that it’s “a question of fairness.” During the brief interview, Jenner said “we have to protect girls’ sports in our schools.”

It was Jenner’s first comment on the controversial issue since announcing her candidacy to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom in a recall election.

Five states have passed laws or implemented executive orders this year limiting the ability of transgender youths to play sports or receive certain medical treatment. There’s been a vehement outcry from supporters of transgender rights.

SOCCER-MANCHESTER UNITED-PROTEST

Man United’s game off after fans storm stadium in protest

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Anti-ownership protests by Manchester United fans forced the postponement of Sunday’s Premier League game against Liverpool as supporters stormed the stadium and reached the pitch, while thousands of others gathered outside Old Trafford to demand the Glazer family ownership sell the club.

Long-running anger against the American owners has boiled over after they were part of the failed attempt to take United into a European Super League. Supporters have been kept out of games due to the coronavirus pandemic.

United and Liverpool players were unable to travel to the stadium where there were clashes briefly between fans and the police under a shower of glass bottles as flares were sent off.

Although the crowds were later dispersed around the time the game was due to start, United said the game was postponed “due to safety and security considerations around the protest” after discussions with police, authorities and the league.

F1-PORTUGUESE GP

Hamilton wins Portuguese GP, extends lead over Verstappen

PORTIMAO, Portugal (AP) — Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton made two typically clinical overtakes to bounce back and win the Portuguese Grand Prix for a 97th career win on Sunday, extending his championship lead over Max Verstappen to eight points in his bid for a record eighth F1 title.

At one point Hamilton slipped to third, but the Mercedes driver slickly moved ahead on Lap 20 of 66 to finish ahead of Red Bull’s Verstappen and his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, who started from the pole position.

Hamilton and Verstappen have been in the top two in all three races so far, with Hamilton winning two of them heading into next Sunday’s Spanish GP.
