Giolito gives Sox 8-inning, 2-hit outing to beat Twins 2-1

UNDATED (AP) — Lucas Giolito (jee-oh-LEE’-toh) gave up two hits over eight innings with a season-high 11 strikeouts, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 2-1.

Giolito threw 111 pitches in his longest start of the year, another stride forward after a rough first month. The third-inning fastball that Nelson Cruz hit to center for his 10th home run accounted for Minnesota’s only runner past second base. Cruz also singled in the first.

Liam Hendricks pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save in 11 chances, following a game-ending strikeout of Max Kepler with a shout and an arm pump to celebrate Chicago’s 20th win in its last 28 games.

MLB-PADRES-TATIS-HOSMER

Tatis, Hosmer clear COVID-19 protocols, return to Padres

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Star shortstop Fernando Tatis (tah-TEES’) Jr. and first baseman Eric Hosmer of the San Diego Padres were activated from the injured list after passing COVID-19 protocols prior to Wednesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies.

Tatis tested positive prior to a game at Colorado on May 11 and Hosmer was pulled from that game due to contract tracing protocols. Right fielder Wil Myers also was pulled from that game after a positive test came back. Manager Jayce Tingler said he hopes Myers will be back this weekend.

Jurickson Profar and Jorge Mateo were also placed into contact tracing that night. They were activated on Monday.

The Padres went 7-1 without Tatis, Hosmer and Myers, including a weekend sweep of the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals.

To make room for Tatis and Hosmer, the Padres optioned INF/OF Tucupita Marcano to Triple-A El Paso, and returned OF John Andreoli to El Paso.

Blues report virus testing issue to NHL hours before Game 2

DENVER (AP) — The St. Louis Blues have reported coronavirus testing problems to the NHL ahead of Game 2 of their first-round playoff series in Denver against the Colorado Avalanche Wednesday night.

General manager Doug Armstrong said the team “discovered discrepancies in COVID test results relating to multiple players” and was working with the NHL to address them. Both teams were expecting to play the second game of their series after Colorado won the opener Monday night.

An NHL spokesman said an update was expected later Wednesday afternoon.

The Blues took the ice for their pregame skate in Denver but canceled media sessions scheduled for coach Craig Berube (buh-ROO’-bee) and players. Wingers Vladimir Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz and goaltender Jordan Binnington were not on the ice with the rest of the team for the pregame skate.

St. Louis is the only one of the 16 playoff teams with any players on the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol list. Leading scorer David Perron has been on the list and unavailable since Saturday, defenseman Jake Walman since Friday and forward Nathan Walker since Thursday. Perron did not travel with the team for the first two games of the series against the Avalanche.

Devils hire Meghan Duggan as manager of player development

UNDATED (AP) — The New Jersey Devils have hired former U.S women’s national team captain Meghan Duggan as manager of player development.

Duggan is the latest prominent women’s hockey player to get a job in an NHL team’s hockey operations department. The Toronto Maple Leafs promoted retired Canadian star Hayley Wickenheiser to senior director of player development and hired fellow Hockey Hall of Famer Danielle Goyette in Wickenheiser’s former role. Last fall, the Chicago Blackhawks hired U.S. forward Kendall Coyne Schofield as player development coach.

The Colts have now signed all seven selections from this year’s draft as the first week of voluntary workouts nears its conclusion.

Granson was a fourth-round pick, No. 127 overall. Ehlinger was taken in the sixth round, No. 218 overall.

OBIT-LEE EVANS

Record-setting sprinter, ’68 Olympic activist Lee Evans dies

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Lee Evans, the record-setting sprinter who wore a black beret in a sign of protest at the 1968 Olympics, died Wednesday. He was 74.

USA Track and Field confirmed Evans’ death. The San Jose Mercury News reported that Evans’ family had started a fundraiser with hopes of bringing him back to the U.S. from Nigeria, where he coached track, to receive medical care after he suffered a stroke last week.

Evans became the first man to crack 44 seconds in the 400 meters, winning the gold medal at the Mexico City Games in 43.86. His victory came shortly after his teammates, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, were sent home from the Olympics for raising their fists on the medals stand.

In later interviews, Evans said an official warned him not do anything similar. He took a different approach, wearing a black beret to show support for the Black Panther Party and other civil rights organizations.
