McKenzie loses perfect game in 8th, Indians beat Tigers 11-0
UNDATED (AP) — Indians starter Triston McKenzie retired the first 23 Detroit batters in order before Harold Castro lined a single to right with two out in the eighth inning and Cleveland beat the Tigers 11-0.
The 24-year-old stunned the Comerica Park crowd of 25,684 hoping to see Miguel Cabrera’s 500th homer. Instead, they gave McKenzie a standing ovation after Castro’s hit and another after he finished the inning with his 11th strikeout. McKenzie came within four outs of breaking baseball’s longest no-hit drought.
Cleveland hasn’t had one since Len Barker’s perfect game on May 15, 1981, against the Toronto Blue Jays.
In other MLB action:
— Willy Adames (ah-DAH’-mehs) scored twice, Christian Yelich (YEH’-lihch) had two hits and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the sloppy Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1. Adames scored in the first and third as Milwaukee never trailed. The NL Central-leading Brewers took two of three in the series against the last-place Pirates. Brent Suter struck out two in the fifth to earn the win. Josh Hader pitched a perfect ninth for his 23rd save.
— Eduardo Rodriguez continued his recent success against Baltimore with six strong innings, J.D. Martinez hit a three-run homer and the Boston Red Sox completed a three-game sweep with a 6-2 victory. The Orioles have lost 11 in a row. Boston has won four of five games after losing 10 of 12 and falling out of first place in the AL East. The Orioles have been outscored 104-34 during this losing stretch, their second-longest skid this season. They had a 14-gamer in May.
MLB NEWS
Yankees’ Cole returning; Nationals’ Ross to IL
WASHINGTON (AP) — New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole has recovered from COVID-19 and will start Monday against the Los Angeles Angels.
Cole is 10-6 with a 3.11 ERA in 21 starts. The four-time All-Star was placed on the COVID-19 injured list after testing positive on Aug. 3. Four days earlier, he allowed eight runs in 5 1/3 innings in a loss at Tampa Bay.
Speaking before Sunday’s game at the Chicago White Sox, Cole described his symptoms as “mild” and he’s now “feeling good” and “ready to go.” Although, he added he won’t “push the limits by any means.”
New York still has four players on the COVID-19 list: First baseman Anthony Rizzo, catcher Gary Sánchez, starter Jordan Montgomery and reliever Clay Holmes.
Elsewhere around the majors:
— Boston Red Sox right-hander Adam Ottavino left Sunday’s game against Baltimore in the seventh inning after getting hit by Jorge Mateo’s hard liner on his left shoulder. Ottavino walked around the mound somewhat dazed and pointed to the front of his left shoulder while chatting with first baseman Bobby Dalbec before manager Alex Cora and a trainer came jogging out. He walked off on his own and was replaced by Garrett Whitlock. The club announced at the end of the inning that he had a “left shoulder contusion.”
— Washington Nationals right-hander Joe Ross has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a partially torn elbow ligament. Ross will be re-evaluated by the doctor who performed his Tommy John surgery in 2017. The 28-year-old Ross has been the Nationals’ most consistent starter this season apart from Max Scherzer, who was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the deadline. Manager Dave Martinez said Ross felt tightness in his right forearm after a bullpen session on Saturday and had an MRI that showed a partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament.
— Veteran outfielder Adam Eaton has been designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels after 25 games with the club. The Angels’ move is the latest indication the injury-plagued team has decided to focus on the future with little hope of ending its six-year playoff drought this season. Eaton batted .200 with one homer and two RBIs for the Angels, getting 13 hits and striking out 16 times. Los Angeles signed the 10-year veteran last month after the White Sox released him. The Angels acquired Eaton to play right field while they were short-handed in the outfield.
NFL NEWS
Giants’ Brunson, Kalu sustain major injuries against Jets
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Second-year linebacker TJ Brunson and defensive back Joshua Kalu sustained major injuries during the New York Giants’ preseason loss to the Jets.
The team announced Brunson tore the ACL in his left knee. The South Carolina product who was drafted in the seventh round last year was hurt late in the fourth quarter of the 12-7 loss while rushing the passer.
Kalu tore a pectoral muscle. The fourth-year veteran was signed as a free agent in the offseason.
Both injuries normally end a player’s season.
Elsewhere around the NFL:
— The Pittsburgh Steelers have acquired linebacker Joe Schobert from the rebuilding Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2022 sixth-round pick. Schobert has practiced with his new teammates for the first time. Schobert is entering his sixth NFL season. He has played in 77 games, making 65 starts.
TENNIS-FEDERER KNEE SURGERY
Federer out ‘many months’ with 3rd surgery on right knee
UNDATED (AP) — Roger Federer is going to miss the U.S. Open because he needs a third operation on his right knee.
In a video message on Instagram, Federer says he’ll be “out of the game for many months” and acknowledged there’s a chance his playing career could be over. But he says he intends to rehab the knee to give himself “a glimmer of hope” of making another comeback.
Federer turned 40 on Aug. 8. He hasn’t played a match since losing in the Wimbledon quarterfinals last month. The Swiss star then sat out the Tokyo Olympics, saying he had hurt his knee during the grass-court season.
Federer missed more than a year of action after first having his knee repaired shortly after the 2020 Australian Open in February of that year. He had a follow-up procedure that June.
Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are all tied for the men’s record with 20 Grand Slam singles titles.

Giorgi knocks out Pliskova to win title at Montreal
MONTREAL (AP) — Camila Giorgi completed a stunning run at the National Bank Open, beating Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 7-5 to win the title in her first WTA 1000 final. Giorgi was unseeded and came in ranked 71st.
She used a strong service game to best the sixth-ranked and fourth-seeded Pliskova, winning 71% of her first-serve points and finishing with seven aces.
Tears welled in Giorgi’s eyes as she broke Pliskova’s serve to close out the match.
The Italian took out No. 9 seed Elise Mertens in the first round, No. 7 seed Petra Kvitova in the round of 16 and No. 15 seed Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals.

Kisner had been 0-5 in his career in playoffs. He was tied at 15-under through 72 holes with Adam Scott, Kevin Na, Si Woo Kim, Branden Grace and Roger Sloan. Scott missed a 4-foot putt for the win on the first playoff hole.
Russell Henley had led each of the first three rounds, but lost his three-shot edge and missed the playoff by a stroke.
