Yanks’ Cole makes 2nd start since COVID break…Scherzer faces Hill
UNDATED (AP) — Gerrit Cole makes his second start for the Yankees since coming off the COVID-19 injured list when New York hosts Minnesota on Saturday. Cole pitched one-run ball over 5 1/3 innings against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday, allowing two hits and striking out nine. He was up to 100 mph with his fastball and said he felt strong despite a 2 ½ week break forced by his positive virus test. Fellow right-hander Kenta Maeda starts for the Twins.
The Yankees won their eighth in a row Friday in a 10-2 drubbing of the Twins.
Also Saturday, the Dodgers’ Max Scherzer faces the Mets’ Rich Hill in a showdown of veteran pitchers traded at the deadline. Scherzer is 2-0 with a 2.20 ERA in three starts since being acquired from Washington. His most recent outing was also against the Mets, when he pitched two-run ball over six innings in a 14-4 win last Sunday. Hill hasn’t registered a decision in five games and has a 4.98 ERA after joining the Mets via trade from Tampa Bay.

Bucks’ Antetokounmpo joins Brewers’ ownership group
UNDATED (AP) — One month after leading the Milwaukee Bucks to their first NBA title in half a century, Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH’-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON’-poh) is teaming up with the city’s other major pro sports franchise by joining the Milwaukee Brewers’ ownership group.
At a news conference Friday, Antetokounmpo said: “This is a dream come true for a kid from Sepolia, Athens, Greece, born from immigrant parents. I could have never imagined I would be in this position.”
Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio and Antetokounmpo said they finalized this agreement in May. Antetokounmpo said he and the team kept it quiet at the time because they didn’t want to distract the Bucks’ playoff run and the early part of the Brewers’ season.
In other baseball news:
— There will be more major league magic at the Field of Dreams site when the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs travel to Dyersville, Iowa, for a game next season. The Reds and Cubs will play a regular-season game on Aug. 11, 2022, at a temporary venue built next to the site where the iconic 1989 baseball movie “Field of Dreams” was filmed. That follows the inaugural game at the site last week. The Chicago White Sox won a 9-8 thriller over the New York Yankees before about 8,000 fans at the temporary field in the first major league game ever played in the state.

Oregon, Oregon State to require vaccination proof to attend
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon and Oregon State became the first Power Five schools to announce they will require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test for people over the age of 12 to attend football games.
In its announcement Friday, Oregon said the decision was made with public health authorities and “peer institutions in the state.” The mandate goes into effect Monday. Oregon is one of several Pac-12 schools that is requiring students and employees to be vaccinated or apply for an exemption.
The Oregon football team opens its season at 54,000-seat Autzen Stadium in Eugene on Sept. 4 against Fresno State. Oregon State begins its home schedule at Reser Stadium on Sept. 11 against Hawaii.
Also Friday, Hawaii became the first major college football school to say it would have no fans in attendance for its opening sports events of the season because of a recent COVID-19 surge. Hawaii’s first home football game is Sept. 5 against Portland State.

IndyCar’s final stretch begins with last oval race of year
MADISON, Ill. (AP) — IndyCar begins the final month of its season with a surprising new face trying to close out the championship and a careful eye on the spiking COVID-19 numbers across the country.
Alex Palou takes a 21-point lead into Saturday night’s race at World Wide Technology Raceway near St. Louis, the fourth and final oval on the schedule. The Spaniard won the season opener in his debut with Chip Ganassi Racing and he has not fallen lower than third in the standings since in his bid to change the status quo in IndyCar.
Saturday’s race opens a four-race set that will close the season. The final two races are in California.
