Rays beat White Sox 8-4
UNDATED (AP) — — The Rays have maintained their four-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East by downing the AL Central-leading White Sox, 8-4. Brandon Lowe (low), Manuel Margot (mahn-WEHL’ mahr-GOH’) and Joey Wendle each had two hits and two RBIs, while Wander Franco delivered two hits and two runs. Luis Patino gave up two runs over six innings of Tampa Bay’s fifth win in six games.
In other MLB action:
— Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run double and the Yankees extended their season-high winning streak to nine games with a 7-1 rout of the Twins. Gerrit Cole improved to 12-6 with six scoreless innings, fanning Josh Donaldson with the bases loaded to end the fifth. Luke Voit had two hits and two RBIs a night after a four-hit game. Red-hot Luke Voit is hitting .500 with three homers and 13 RBIs in his past seven starts after providing two hits and two ribbies on Saturday.
— Hyun Jin Ryu scattered five hits over seven innings to pitch the Blue Jays past the Tigers, 3-0. Randal Grichuk (GRIH’-chuhk) and Marcus Semien each homered to help Ryu pick up his 12th win, tying Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole and Oakland’s Chris Bassitt for the AL lead. Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera went 0 for 3 with a walk to remain at 499 career home runs.
— Kris Bubic carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the Royals’ 4-2 win over the Cubs. Whit Merrifield had three hits and stole home as part of a double steal, helping Kansas City win for the fifth time in six games. Nicky Lopez also had three hits and drove in a run to back Bubic, whose no-hitter ended when Patrick Wisdom homered following a 34-minute weather delay.

Mets’ Lindor says Cohen is right to criticize his hitting
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Francisco Lindor says first-year New York Mets owner Steve Cohen was right to criticize his hitting in a tweet this week. Cohen tweeted Wednesday about his struggling ballclub that “it’s hard to understand how professional hitters can be this unproductive.”
New York has lost seven of eight and ranks 27th in the majors with 459 runs despite a lineup full of proven hitters.
Lindor has been among the bigger disappointments, hitting .228 with 11 homers and a .702 OPS in his first season after being acquired from Cleveland and signed to $341 million, 10-year contract.

Hurricane Henri forces Monday finish to Northern Trust
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — The final round of The Northern Trust has been pushed back to Monday because of approaching Hurricane Henri.
The PGA Tour decided to shut down New Jersey’s Liberty National on Sunday about an hour before the leaders began the third round. Saturday’s third round is proceeding as scheduled.
Henri became a hurricane late Saturday morning. The New Jersey coast across from Manhattan was under a tropical storm warning and a flood watch.
It will be the second time in 10 years the tournament was disrupted by a hurricane. It also happened in 2011 at Plainfield when the event was shortened to 54 holes.
GOLF-WOMEN’S BRITISH OPEN
Nordqvist, Koerstz Madsen share lead
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) — Scandinavian golfers Anna Nordqvist and Nanna Koerstz Madsen share the lead heading into the final round of the Women’s British Open.
A bunched-up chasing pack featuring Nelly Korda and Lexi Thompson promises to make it a Sunday to remember at Carnoustie.
Two-time major champion Nordqvist shot her lowest round in one of women’s golf’s five elite events with a bogey-free 7-under 65. That was despite the toughest conditions of the week on the storied Scottish links.
Denmark’s Koerstz Madsen joined Nordqvist at 9 under overall by shooting 68. Korda shot 70 and was one of 12 players within three shots of the leaders.

Floyd Reese, GM of Titans’ Super Bowl team, dies at 73
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Floyd Reese, the general manager who assembled the roster for the Tennessee Titans’ lone Super Bowl appearance, has died. He was 73.
His family told the team of his death. Reese had cancer and was with his family when he died Saturday, according to a social media post by ESPN 102.5 The Game, the radio station where Reese worked until mid-December.
Reese spent 21 years with the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans as coach and executive, and he remains the winningest general manager in franchise history.
Floyd took over as GM just as the NFL introduced the salary cap and he rebuilt a team that made seven straight playoff appearances. Under Reese, the Titans reached two AFC championship games in four seasons. He helped oversee the franchise’s move from Houston to Nashville in 1997 and spent 13 seasons as general manager. The former coach also was a senior adviser for the New England Patriots. Floyd Reese was 73 years old.

Day names C.J. Stroud starter at QB for No. 4 Buckeyes
UNDATED (AP) — Ohio State coach Ryan Day says freshman C.J. Stroud will start at quarterback for the No. 4 Buckeyes in the opener against Minnesota Sept. 2.
Stroud has been the apparent leader in the quarterback derby since spring practice. He got the nod over fellow second-year player Jack Miller and true freshmen Kyle McCord and Quinn Ewers.
The 6-foot-3, 218-pound Stroud, from Rancho Cucamonga, California, played sparingly in mop-up duty last year behind Heisman-finalist Justin Fields in the pandemic-shortened season. He has yet to throw a pass in a college game.

IndyCar’s final stretch begins with last oval race of year
MADISON, Ill. (AP) — IndyCar begins the final month of its season with a surprising new face trying to close out the championship and a careful eye on the spiking COVID-19 numbers across the country.
Alex Palou takes a 21-point lead into Saturday night’s race at World Wide Technology Raceway near St. Louis, the fourth and final oval on the schedule. The Spaniard won the season opener in his debut with Chip Ganassi Racing and he has not fallen lower than third in the standings since in his bid to change the status quo in IndyCar.
Saturday’s race opens a four-race set that will close the season. The final two races are in California.
