Cabrera hits 500th career homer, Tigers beat Jays 5-3 in 11
UNDATED (AP) — Miguel Cabrera became the 28th major league player to hit 500 home runs, Daz Cameron doubled home the winning run in the 11th inning, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 Sunday.
The 38-year-old Cabrera connected on a 1-1 pitch from left-hander Steven Matz in the sixth, sending the ball over the scoreboard in right-center field.
Fans at Rogers Centre rose for a standing ovation as Cabrera rounded the bases. After celebrating with his teammates, the Tigers slugger came out of the dugout to accept a curtain call, taking off his helmet and bowing to the crowd behind Detroit’s dugout.
Cabrera is hoping to become the first hitter to reach 500 homers and 3,000 hits in the same season.
Cabrera’s 500th home run was hit No. 2,955 of his career, and he can reach that 3,000 milestone this year if he can stay healthy and average one hit per game. Only six players have 3,000 hits and 500 homers: Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Rafael Palmeiro, Albert Pujols, Alex Rodriguez and Eddie Murray.
Left-hander Kirby Snead, Toronto’s seventh pitcher of the game, got two quick outs in the 11th before Cameron and Willi Castro hit back-to-back RBI doubles.
In other MLB action:
— Backup catcher Francisco Mejía had a three-run double, five Tampa Bay pitchers combined on a seven-hitter, and the Rays beat the Chicago White Sox 9-0 in a matchup of AL division leaders. Austin Meadows had three RBIs for Tampa Bay, which took the final two games of the series after the White Sox won the opener 7-5 in 11 innings. The Rays outscored Chicago 17-4 in the two wins. Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer departed with left hip tightness after two innings. It was Archer’s first start since leaving a game April 10 against the New York Yankees with right forearm tightness.
— Adam Wainwright allowed two hits in eight masterful innings and Paul Goldschmidt homered to lead the St. Louis Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0. The Cardinals snapped a two-game skid and kept the Pirates from earning their first series sweep of the season. They remain the only team in the majors without one. Wainwright threw 106 pitches and retired his final 11 hitters. He hasn’t permitted a run in his past 19 innings against the Pirates and has won his last seven decisions against them. The 39-year-old right-hander struck out nine and did not walk a batter in improving to 20-7 lifetime against Pittsburgh.
— Kolten Wong homered and drove in three runs, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-3 victory over the Washington Nationals. Lorenzo Cain also connected as Milwaukee took the rubber game of the weekend series. The NL Central leaders have won 10 of 13 overall. Hunter Strickland got two outs for the win, and Josh Hader recorded the last out for his 26th save. Wong drove Sean Nolin’s second pitch deep to right for his 10th homer. It was his fifth leadoff shot this season and No. 7 for his career.
— Ty France tied the game with a solo home run in the ninth inning and put the Seattle Mariners on top with an RBI single in the 11th before Kyle Seager belted a three-run homer in a 6-3 win over the Houston Astros on Sunday. J.P. Crawford started the 11th on second base and moved to third on a wild pitch by Ryne Stanek with no outs. Mitch Haniger walked before France singled on a grounder to right field to put Seattle up 3-2. Seager then connected on his 29th home run this season to extend the lead to 6-2.
— Jorge Soler (HOHR’-hay soh-LEHR’) homered, Touki Toussaint pitched effectively into the sixth inning, and the surging Atlanta Braves beat Baltimore 3-1, extending the Orioles’ losing streak to 18 games. Baltimore’s skid is the longest in the major leagues since Kansas City dropped 19 in a row in 2005. Adam Duvall added a two-run double for the Braves, who have won nine in a row and 16 of their last 18.
— Tyler Naquin (NAY’-kwihn) hit two solo homers and Vladimir Gutierrez pitched seven effective innings, helping the Cincinnati Reds beat the Miami Marlins 3-1 for a sweep of their four-game series. Naquin’s leadoff shot extended his hitting streak to 12 games. He added his 18th homer in the eighth, making it 3-1 when he drove an 0-2 fastball from Anthony Bass into the seats in right-center. Cincinnati won for the sixth time in eight games. It began the day in a tie with San Diego for the second NL wild card.
— Andrew Benintendi drove in three runs, and the Kansas City Royals beat the sliding Chicago Cubs 9-1 for a sweep of their weekend series. It was Chicago’s franchise-record 13th consecutive loss at Wrigley Field. Benintendi and Carlos Santana each had three hits in Kansas City’s sixth win in seven games. Hunter Dozier doubled and drove in two runs. Royals right-hander Carlos Hernández struck out a career-high eight in seven innings, also a career best. He allowed one run and four hits.
— Sunday’s game between the Boston Red Sox and the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park was postponed because of Tropical Storm Henri. The Boston area was hit by heavy rain on Sunday morning as Henri approached the northeastern U.S. coastline. The series finale will be made up on Monday at 1:10 p.m. EDT.
— The Twins and Yankees postponed their game scheduled for Sunday. It was rescheduled for Sept. 13 in the Bronx, which means Minnesota will have to disrupt its own six-game homestand to travel east for the makeup game.

Rays place Cruz on COVID-19 injured list; Archer, Choi exit
UNDATED (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays have placed slugger Nelson Cruz on the COVID-19 injured list. The move was announced about an hour before the Rays hosted the Chicago White Sox in a matchup of AL division leaders.
The 41-year-old Cruz was acquired from Minnesota last month. He is hitting .198 with seven homers and 18 RBIs in 24 games with Tampa Bay. He has a .270 batting average, with 26 homers and 68 RBIs this season.
Tampa Bay also lost starting pitcher Chris Archer and first baseman Ji-Man Choi during the first two innings of the game.

Nordqvist wins Women’s British Open for 3rd major title
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) — Anna Nordqvist of Sweden has won her third major title with a one-shot victory at the Women’s British Open at Carnoustie.

Nanna Koerstz Madsen of Denmark was tied for the lead with Nordqvist heading down No. 18 but found a greenside bunker with her approach and made double bogey after shanking out. Lizette Salas, Georgia Hall and Madelene Sagstrom were tied for second place at 11 under.
Anna Nordqvist’s win has earned her an automatic spot in the Solheim Cup for Europe. She secured one of four places via the world ranking. Sophia Popov, Charley Hull and Carlota Ciganda also made it through the world ranking.
PGA-NORTHERN TRUST
PGA Tour hopes for best after rain soaks Liberty National
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — The PGA Tour made an early call to push back the final round of The Northern Trust until Monday. That was a smart move even with Hurricane Henri moving north and east.
It made landfall Sunday in Rhode Island as a tropical storm. Liberty National received 5 inches of rain but no wind damage.
The hope now is to be able to start — and finish — the final round on Monday. Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith are tied for the lead at 16-under 197, one shot ahead of Erik van Rooyen. It’s the first day off at a tournament since the Zozo Championship in Japan in 2019.
TENNIS-CINCINNATI
Barty, Zverev notch efficient wins in Cincinnati finals
MASON, Ohio (AP) — Ash Barty bounced back from a disappointing loss at the Tokyo Olympics. Gold medalist Alexander Zverev carried over his momentum from Tokyo. Both are in fine form heading into the U.S. Open, which begins a week from Monday in New York.
The top-ranked Barty won her fifth title of the season, taking eight of the last nine games from wild card Jil Teichmann for a straight-sets victory in the Western & Southern Open final.
Zverev, too, had a relatively easy time in the Cincinnati final. He won the first four games over Andrey Rublev and finished off the seventh-ranked player in 58 minutes.

Titans coach Mike Vrabel tests positive for COVID-19
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel (VRAY’-bul) is vaccinated but now says he has tested positive for COVID-19 and has quarantined pending further testing.
Under NFL protocols, Vrabel must have two negative test results within 48 hours to go back to work inside the Titans’ headquarters or remain in quarantine for 10 days. That could keep him away until Sept. 1. The Titans open the season on Sept. 12, hosting Arizona.
