Yanks pass Jays in AL wild-card race
UNDATED (AP) — There’s been a slight shift in the American League race, with the Toronto Blue Jays on the outside looking in. The Jays were beaten at home by the Twins, the Yankees clobbered the Indians and the Red Sox are in line to beat the Orioles.
Corey Kluber beat his old team and Joey Gallo slammed two of the Yankees’ five home runs in a 8-0 pounding of the Indians. Aaron Judge, Brett Gardner and Giancarlo Stanton also went deep for the Bombers, who moved a half-game ahead of Toronto for the second AL wild card.
Kluber won for the first time in nearly four months, scattering four hits over six innings.
Jorge Polanco, Josh Donaldson, and Miguel Sanó (sah-NOH’) hit consecutive home runs in a five-run third that carried the Twins past the Blue Jays, 7-3. Michael Pineda (pih-NAY’-dah) pitched 5 2/3 innings to win his third straight start, yielding three runs and three hits to help Minnesota win for the second time in six games.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reclaimed the major league lead with his 46th home run, but the Jays lost for just the third time in 16 games this month.

— Kyle Farmer doubled twice and the Reds snapped the Los Angeles Dodgers’ six-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory. Winning pitcher Luis Castillo struck out 10 and didn’t allow a runner past second base over 6 1/3 shutout innings. Walker Buehler was hoping to notch his career-high 15th win, but the Reds reached him for three runs on six hits and two walks over six frames.
— The Pirates knocked off the Marlins, 2-1 as Wil Crowe pitched five innings of one run ball for his first victory since July 30. Cole Tucker hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Dolphins’ Fuller to miss Sunday’s game
UNDATED (AP) — Dolphins wide receiver Will Fuller has been ruled out for Sunday’s game with Buffalo and will be away from the team indefinitely while he deals with a personal issue. Dolphins coach Brian Flores said Fuller’s situation will be considered a day-to-day issue and that the speedy wide receiver would remain on the active roster.
In other NFL news:
— Cowboys offensive lineman Ty Nsekhe (nih-SEHK’-ee) is out for Sunday’s game at the Chargers after being hospitalized overnight because of heat illness. The athletic trainers decided to send him to the hospital because they didn’t like the way the 35-year-old was responding to rehydration.
—The Chargers have placed starting offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga (buh-LAH’-gah) on injured reserve, meaning he will miss at least three games. Bulaga was battling groin and back injuries throughout training camp. He started at right tackle during last Sunday’s opener at Washington, playing 45 snaps before being sidelined early in the third quarter after tweaking his back.
—The back issue that bothered Green Bay outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith throughout the preseason will now force the Packers to play without their Pro Bowl pass rusher for the next few weeks. Packers coach Matt LaFleur says Smith is going on injured reserve. Smith has 26 sacks for the Packers over the last two seasons.
— Browns starting linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. is going on injured reserve with a hamstring issue that will keep him out at least three games. Walker led Cleveland with nine tackles in last week’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He’s also the Browns’ signal caller on defense.
— Saints coach Sean Payton says the club has decided to continue practicing at TCU next week in preparation for their Week 3 game at New England before returning to their New Orleans-area headquarters in Week 4. Payton says they plan to host the Giants in the Superdome. The Saints have been displaced to the Dallas area since Aug. 28 due to damage caused by Hurricane Ida.
— Raiders running back Josh Jacobs will miss this week’s game at Pittsburgh with injuries to his toe and ankle. Jacobs didn’t practice all week for the Raiders after rushing for 34 yards and two touchdowns in a season-opening 33-27 win in overtime against Baltimore on Monday night.
— The list of kickers signed by the Titans just keeps growing with the addition of Ryan Santoso to the practice squad Friday. Randy Bullock will kick Sunday for the Titans in Seattle, their fourth different kicker since training camp started. Santoso provides some insurance with Sam Ficken and Tucker McCann both on injured reserve.
— Linebacker Kyle Van Noy is out for the Patriots matchup with the Jets with a throat injury. An abdomen issue will also sideline kicker Quinn Nordin.
— College Football Hall of Famer and six-time Pro Bowl selection Roger Brown has died at 84. Brown played 10 years in the NFL for the Lions and Rams after being taking by Detroit in the fourth round of the 1960 draft. In his seven seasons with the Lions, Brown went to the Pro Bowl five straight years and was an All-Pro selection in 1962 and ’63.

Austin Peay leaving for ASUN
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Austin Peay is leaving the Ohio Valley Conference for the ASUN Conference effective July 1, becoming the league’s 13th full member.
The move ratified by Austin Peay’s Board of Trustees and announced Friday ends a membership with the OVC that began in 1962.
Austin Peay won 69 league titles, 21 since 2010. All 17 programs will move to the ASUN and be immediately eligible for league awards, postseason play and NCAA Tournament automatic berths.

Kane questioned about ex-Hawks assistant
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane said Friday he has participated in the investigation into allegations that a then-assistant coach sexually assaulted two players in 2010, adding that he did not know anything happened at the time.
Kane’s comments were his first since the allegations came to light. The Blackhawks launched the investigation led by a former federal prosecutor and pledged to release the findings.
Two lawsuits were filed against the team earlier this year. The first alleges sexual assault by video coach Bradley Aldrich during the team’s run to the 2010 Stanley Cup title. The second was filed by a former student whom Aldrich was later convicted of assaulting in Michigan.

Choi, Clarke share lead thru 18
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — K.J. Choi closed eagle-birdie-birdie for a 7-under 63 and share of the first-round lead with Darren Clarke in the PGA Tour Champions’ Stanford International.
Choi had a bogey-free round at Minnehaha Country Club. Clarke also finished with a birdie on the par-4 18th.
Robert Karlsson, Matt Gogel, Rod Pampling and Brandt Jobe were a stroke back.
SOCCER-PELE HOSPITALIZED
Pelé takes minor step back in recovery
SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian soccer great Pelé “took a little step back” in his recovery from surgery to remove a tumor from his colon but he is “recovering well” at a Sao Paulo hospital. That’s according to his daughter, Kely Nascimento.
The Albert Einstein hospital said the 80-year-old Edson Arantes do Nascimento had returned to intensive care after “a brief breathing instability” Thursday night. Pelé was currently stable in “semi-intensive” care, the hospital said, and he “continues recovering.” It did not give further details.
