Europe makes desperate push at Ryder Cup
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) —Europe is making a desperate push to get back in contention in the Ryder Cup.
With all the afternoon fourball matches on the back nine Saturday, the Europeans led in two matches, the U.S. led in one and one other was tied. Europe came into the afternoon trailing 9-3, the biggest deficit the Europeans have faced since they joined Britain and Ireland in the Ryder Cup in 1979.
Two teams have come back from 10-6 deficits in recent history — Europe in 2012 at Medinah and the U.S. in 1999 at Brookline.

Cardinals set team record with 15th straight win, beat Cubs
CHICAGO (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals set a franchise record with their 15th straight win, boosted when catcher Yadier Molina and center fielder Harrison Bader helped pull off a wild double play in an 8-5 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Bader, Tyler O’Neill and Paul DeJong homered as the Cardinals broke the team record of 14 wins in a row set in 1935. Bader went 4 for 4 and scored three times as the Cardinals held their comfortable lead for the second NL wild-card spot — they began the day five games ahead of Philadelphia and six in front of Cincinnati.
The Cubs have lost five straight. The loss snapped Chicago’s streak of seven consecutive winning seasons at Wrigley Field.

UNDATED (AP) — Chris Tyree returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown and Drew Pyne threw a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter in relief of an injured Jack Coan as No. 12 Notre Dame beat No. 18 Wisconsin 41-13.
Brian Kelly became the winningest coach in Notre Dame history with victory No. 106, surpassing Knute Rockne in his 12th season with the Irish.
Coan, a Wisconsin transfer, left with an apparent left leg injury midway through the third quarter with the game tied at 10.

— Sean Clifford passed for four touchdowns and a career-high 401 yards, leading No. 6 Penn State to a 38-17 victory over Villanova. Clifford completed 19 of 26 passes, finding Parker Washington for two TDs and Jahan Dotson and KeAndre Lambert-Smith for one apiece. Tyler Warren rushed for a touchdown and Jordan Stout kicked a field goal for the Nittany Lions, who led 17-3 at the break in their eighth straight win. Villanova quarterback Daniel Smith threw 57- and 17-yard touchdown passes to Rayjoun Pringle in the fourth.

It was the 15th straight defeat for the overmatched Minutemen. The Chanticleers opened 4-0 for the second straight season and have won 15 of their past 16 games. They also cranked up the offense after a subpar 28-25 win at Buffalo last week and finished with 553 yards. They carried a shutout midway into the fourth quarter before UMass kicked a field goal.

TJ Watt ruled out against Cincinnati
UNDATED (AP) — Steelers star outside linebacker T.J. Watt won’t play against Cincinnati after all. The team has downgraded Watt from questionable to out for Sunday’s home game.
Watt is dealing with a groin injury. He was hurt in the second quarter of last weekend’s 26-17 loss to Las Vegas. He was limited in practice this week but said Friday he was hoping to play.
Watt’s absence means the Steelers will be without both of their starting outside linebackers on Sunday. Alex Highsmith was already ruled out due to a groin injury.
In other NFL news:
— The Miami Dolphins have placed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (TOO’-ah tuhng-ah-vy-LOH’-ah) on injured reserve. That means he will miss at least three games before he can return from fractured ribs. Jacoby Brissett (brih-SEHT’) is set to start for the Dolphins and Reid Sinnett is being moved up from the practice squad in order to serve as the backup.
— Packers offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers due to an ankle injury. Jenkins got hurt during Monday night’s 35-17 victory over the Detroit Lions, though he remained in the game. The Packers also announced that tight end Dominique Dafney won’t play against the 49ers due to a hip injury.
— Chargers defensive lineman Justin Jones will miss his second straight game after being downgraded to out for Sunday’s game at Kansas City. Jones suffered a calf injury in Los Angeles’ 20-16 win over Washington on Sept. 12 and has not practiced the last two weeks. Christian Covington is expected to get the start in Jones’ place. Edge rusher Joey Bosa is questionable and remains a game time decision due to ankle and toe injuries.

Wizards’ F Rui Hachimura to miss start of training camp
WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Wizards forward Rui Hachimura will miss the start of training camp for personal reasons. The team says it’s an excused absence and there will be more updates when appropriate.
Hachimura averaged 13.8 points over 57 games last season. He averaged 13.5 points as a rookie in 2019-20. The Wizards open the preseason Oct. 5 at Houston. Their regular-season opener is at Toronto on Oct. 20.
NHL-BLUES-SENATORS TRADE
Senators acquire F Zach Sanford in trade with Blues
OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — The Ottawa Senators have acquired Zach Sanford, sending St. Louis native Logan Brown to the Blues in exchange for the veteran forward. St. Louis also receives a conditional 2022 draft pick from Ottawa.
Sanford had 10 goals and six assists in 52 games for the Blues last season.

Norris snatches pole position in wet Russian GP qualifying
SOCHI, Russia (AP) — Lando Norris has taken the pole position for the first time in a rainy qualifying session for the Russian Grand Prix after timing his final fast lap to perfection on a drying track.
The McLaren driver set the pace with a time of 1 minute, 41.993 seconds in the dying seconds of the session after switching to slick tires as the racing line dried. He pushed Carlos Sainz into second place as George Russell took third for Williams.
Lewis Hamilton placed fourth for Mercedes. Max Verstappen of Red Bull leads the championship standings but will start from the back of the grid in the race Sunday because he changed his engine.
